Closing Time: Projecting the Rangers Bullpen
  • By Bo Reed
  • December 28th, 2009

With the addition of Darren Oliver to the Rangers already deep bullpen, Jon Daniels can focus on adding to the Rangers offense between now and Spring Training.

With all of the pieces in place, the Rangers bullpen is still a tough situation to figure out due to all the moving parts and young players who could also crack into the rotation, but I’ll give it a shot.

Expect another article in March that will probably change everything, but for now here are my very, very early predictions for the Rangers bullpen. The backend shouldn’t be much different than last season with Frank Francisco returning as the Rangers closer.

Frankie battled multiple injuries last season and was erratic at times, but the Rangers remain confident in his ability to close games out...

Rangers Still Have Some Questions Left Before Spring Training
  • By Bo Reed
  • December 19th, 2009

Spring Training is still two months away and the Rangers are almost done building their roster for 2010, but some questions remain as we enter the home stretch of the offseason.

Earlier reports about catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s throwing shoulder appear to have been exaggerated as the Rangers now believe he was simply rushed back to the field leading to arm fatigue.

The question is will he be ready to go out of the gate? At this point, the Rangers have few options outside the organization, thanks in large part to the ridiculous contract the Washington Nationals gave Pudge Rodriguez before the Winter Meetings.

Free agents are asking for too much money and too many years on their contracts for the Rangers to be involved.

Taylor Teagarden is the best in house...

Rangers on the Brink of a New Era
  • By Bo Reed
  • December 17th, 2009

I know I haven’t exactly been very nice to Tom Hicks over the past few months as the Rangers sale was in eternal limbo, but I have to give credit where credit is due so kudos Tom.

Granted if he had acted sooner the Rangers might have been able to do more in free agency this year, but that’s all in the past now.

By selecting Chuck Greenberg’s group of investors Hicks has not only guaranteed the new group a smooth approval process, but the transition in baseball operations will be seamless.

In fact, all that will change is Daniels and Co.

will have more money to work with next summer, but those making the decisions will remain in place.

It’s very telling that Greenberg spent more time talking about...

Despite Positive Rhetoric from Los Angeles, Rangers Were Right to Release Padilla
  • By Bo Reed
  • December 17th, 2009

I don’t care about his stats or his effect on the Los Angeles Dodgers rotation down the stretch and in the playoffs. I don’t care about all the wonderful hugs and kisses coming from the Dodger locker room and I certainly don’t care how confused the players in Los Angeles are about why the Rangers released Vicente Padilla. Cutting Padilla was the right move to make then and it’s still the right move now even with the Rangers sitting out another postseason. Maybe if the Dodgers are so confused they should talk to their cross-town rival Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim or the New York Yankees about their feelings toward Padilla. They could even take it a step further and look at the quotes from Michael Young who has never...

Rangers and Jaramillo Parting Ways is One of Multiple Personnel Changes
  • By Bo Reed
  • December 17th, 2009

By now most of you have heard that Rudy Jaramillo's 15-year career with the Texas Rangers has apparently come to an end.  During his tenure in Arlington the Rangers and their fans have seen some awesome power, become one of the most elite hitting teams in baseball, but more recently have struggled when it counted most. Jaramillo will be missed and he will likely continue to have a productive career, but as my colleague Bo Reed also stated, this might have come at a good time. The Rangers saw a huge increase in success on the mound and in the field, but it was a lack of hitting that likely kept the team out of the postseason.  With so much already riding on success in 2010, the Rangers can't afford to have...

Omar Vizquel Should be a Ranger in 2010
  • By Bo Reed
  • December 17th, 2009

In the offseason before the 2009 season the Texas Rangers signed future Hall of Famer Omar Vizquel to a 1-year contract as a utility infielder. This acquisition made sense from every aspect as Vizquel was arguable the greatest Venezuelan born baseball player and starting shortstop Elvis Andrus is also Venezuelan.  He is also an 11-time Gold Glover, one of the best fielding shortstops in baseball history, and he has the ability to play all over the infield. Initially the acquisition of Omar's services was to be a back-up to Andrus, as he was debatedly named the starter at shortstop and Michael Young moved to third base. I say initially because at first it was thought that Andrus might have some difficulty making the transition from hitting at Double-A to the Major leagues.  However,...
