A Hammerin’ Hank of Their Very Own
  • By Robert Cox
  • March 13th, 2010

The Rays made one of their patented moves Monday, adding Utility Man Hank Blalock to the Spring Training roster.   I think it is a great move. I was a proponent of picking up Blalock earlier this year when it appeared as if the 29-year-old veteran would be without a team when Spring Training started.

He seemed to be an affordable and reliable option at DH should Pat Burrell do what he did in 2009 and he would be a stronger corner infield bat off the bench than Dan Johnson would be in case the Rays have some injury issues in 2010. It seems that Andrew Friedman was of the same mind. Blalock signed a 1-year $925,000 incentive-laden minor league contract. Unfortunately, it seems that the Rays do not see him as somebody who can legitimately...

Upton Gets a Big Pay Day–Nope, Not THAT One…

Congrats to the Arizona Diamondbacks on signing one of the more talented young hitters in the game in Justin Upton. Anybody in the Rays and/or BJ camp listenting?   While he is the self-proclaimed "better" baseball brother of the two (at least according to what he said to MLB Network while being interviewed with BJ by his side), you have to imagine that the brother in St.

Pete is fuming a little bit. He's been playing longer, has had some big moments, and yet will make a "paltry" $3 million compared to his Arizona D-back brother's nearly $7 million. The younger Upton hit .300 with 30 doubles, 7 triples, 26 homers and 86 RBIs last season. Would be nice to get that out of the older Upton, wouldn't it Rays fans? Let's hope that BJ and the...

Rays a Little Wind Blown

The Rays have started their Spring Training campaign with a 1-1 record.

Am I nervous? Sad? Frustrated? C’mon.

It’s spring.

With that obvious stuff out of the way, I think it is funny how the Florida Spring Training schedule has had to contend with the elements more than ever.

Strong winds, sometimes gusting up to 40 mph, low temperatures, and rain-peppered days have been the norm for this exhibition season.

Wednesday, the Rays played in Sarasota against the Baltimore Orioles.

The team from up north beat up on the Sunshine-staters badly, 12-2.

The O’s hit about two dozen homers while the Rays got a dinger from Sean Rodriguez.

Reports from WDAE radio (who had a reporter at the game) indicated that the...

Fed Up With Upton
  • By Robert Cox

I'm done with BJ. Sorry. I know it sounds blasphemous to give up on a 25-year-old Center Fielder with a rocket arm and sky-high potential, but I am. I have a good friend who preaches patience with Bossman, Jr. to me whenever he can, but I'm done.  He tries to make me feel guilty, but then I watch the debacle that is a BJ Upton at bat and I suddenly feel good about my stance. Before you condemn me as being an impatient idiot (which I often get thrown at me) take into account that I have been one of BJ’s staunchest supporters over the years. I do love the guy, believe it or not. But boy oh boy has he taken us for a ride. Back when he was a Durham Bull BJ was embroiled in...

Free Agents That May Catch the Rays' Attention: Hitters
  • By Robert Cox
  • March 5th, 2010

With the start of Spring Training workouts just a few weeks away and the free agents market cooling off more than ever, the Rays may be reaching a point where picking up a player or two for bargain basement prices has arrived. This blog has long been a proponent of finding a designated hitter who can actually, you know, hit and improving the team’s overall depth. These are a few players who may fill those roles for the Rays in 2010 who, due to their (sometimes) reluctance to sign early in free agency, may be bought for next to nothing. JERMAINE DYE 2009 stats: .250 avg 27 hr 81 rbi 19 2b .340 OBP 108 K      Dye’s 2009 was not up to his usual standards and his second half of the year (.179 ave/7 hr)...

Rays Beat BJ
  • By Robert Cox

First of all, can we say anybody really won?     It just came down that the Tampa Bay Rays have won their arbitration hearing against center fielder BJ Upton.  The likely heartbroken Upton will see his salary go only from $435,000 to $3 million instead of the $3.3 million he was seeking. How sad... What this means is that Upton will report to Spring Training making more money than he ever has in his young life.  While he may have "lost" his hearing, he certainly came out like a bandit.  His numbers last year were not horrendous (.241/11/41/42 SB) and his superb defense was locked in the entire season long.  You could have made a case that Upton coulda/shoulda gotten the number he and his agent, Larry Reynolds, were seeking.  What this also means is that he...
