Roster Speculation Part 2: examining the postion players and 25-man roster possibilities
  • By Sam Sturling
  • March 16th, 2010

A little bit less than half way through spring training, the battle for reserve spots on the Giants 25-man roster is slowly being played out but there are still plenty of questions and possibilities leaving us with a lot of uncertainty regarding who will be wearing a San Francisco Giants uniform when April 5 comes around. Here is a look at the Giants’ positon players, and my estimations for who will make the squad on opening day. On the team C Bengie Molina 1B Aubrey Huff 2B Juan Uribe SS Edgar Renteria 3B Pablo Sandoval OF Nate Schierholtz OF Aaron Rowand OF Mark DeRosa Roster Candidates (10 players competing for likely 5 spots) OF Fred Lewis 1B Travis Ishikawa OF Andres Torres C Eli Whiteside C/1B Buster Posey INF Kevin Frandsen INF Ryan Rohlinger INF/OF Eugenio Velez 1B/OF John Bowker INF Matt Downs Likely will make the Cut OF Fred Lewis - towards...

Solid fielding, clutch hitting by prospects help defeat Dodgers in Scottsdale

As has been my tone throughout spring training so far, a win is a win.

This is especially true when that win comes against the Dodgers.

Although the 2-2 score after nine innings too closely resembled a typical regular season match-up, Roger Kieschnick's single to lead-off the tenth, and Ryan Rohlinger's two-out knock to bring home Francisco Peguero (who came in to pinch-run for Kieschnick) gave the Giants the W.

Notes -With Manny Burriss set to start the season on the DL, Rohlinger appears to be creeping into the lead to make the opening day 25-man roster as the utility infielder.

Kevin Frandsen also has a legitimate shot, given that could possibly even help out as a RH platoon to rest Aubrey Huff. -I may have been raving about Darren Ford about...

(VERY) Preliminary To-Do List for the offseason (part 1)

(Part one of a two part series.  Part two will come in the day or two) So one day after the season, and no official word on the extension of Bruce Bochy and Brian Sabean's contracts, but that sounds like a a mere formality at this point. The sixteen game improvement over the 2008 season, grouped with the many accomplishments including the growth of Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain, the rise of other homegrown studs such as Brian Wilson, Sergio Romo, Eugenio Velez and Nate Schierholtz (not to mention development of young solid position players like Travis Ishikawa and John Bowker) plus the most successfull farm system in the past year with young stars-in-waiting Madison Bumgarner, Buster Posey, Waldis Joaquin and Dan Runzler, plus top prospects in-waiting like Matt Downs, Jesus...

It's all winding down, but what a year!

There could be no better way to wrap up Giants 2009 season at AT&T Park than a steller outing by Tim Lincecum. After a sub-par September that assured the Giants of missing the post-season for the sixth straight season, the last couple days have shown San Francisco fans not just how much they all have to look forward to, but also how for the Giants have come from the boring veteran-laden-pay-roll-killing teams of the past few years. The fact that Brian Sabean and Bruce Bochy are now returning for at least one more season is a really good sign that this progression towards a youthful, energetic, and winning ball club can continue and perhaps make a playoff run in 2010. Heading into the offseason, Neukom, Sabean and Co. surely have a...

Bittersweet, but not that bitter

Game 162: Giants 4 Padres 3 After watching more than 155 games with the Giants in the thick of a playoff race, it was actually kind of nice to watch a game without feeling like the bottom is going to drop out with every run allowed or failure to move the runner across. Loading the bases with no outs in the first inning, then grounding into a double play and ending the inning with one run sort of put the "been there done that" feeling, then once again hitting into a bases-loaded-no-out double play seemed all too much like deja vu. But, having Juan Uribe knock Eugenio Velez around with a double to score the second run of the inning at least showed that the Giants weren't going to lay down...
