Erring On The Side Of Caution: Ryan Clark Will Not Play Tonigh

  • November 9th, 2009

Though officially listed as questionable all this week for the Monday Night match up against the stunning Denver Broncos, Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark will not be on the field for the defending Super Bowl Champions.

Although Clark was cleared by his doctor’s to play, the real decision was in the hands of Head Coach Mike Tomlin and Clark himself. Clark, being the competitor that he is wanted to play, but in reality the only vote that counted was Tomlin’s.

As we all know Clark has a sickle cell trait that could turn life threatening when exposed to high altitudes like those at Mile High Stadium. Ultimately the right call was made in regards to Ryan’s health.

Teammate and Super Bowl XL MVP Hines Ward publicly stated that if he were in the same situation that he would not play, as did many of Clark’s teammates.

To these men, football is more than a game, it’s a way of life. It’s a way to earn a living for themselves and their families. It’s not only fun, it’s a job.

But, at NO point should a job unnecessarily risk a person’s life. I say unnecessarily because I believe that some jobs are necessary, like the job done by every man and woman in the United States Armed Forces, I thank them for their sacrifices.

Tyrone Carter will more than likely get the start at Free Safety come tonight’s game, with Deshea Townsend possibly getting to see some playing time at the position instead of just playing corner back in nickel and dime situations.

The duo filled in nicely during fellow safety, Troy Polamalu’s injury and will look to play their hearts out once more, something the Steelers defense is known for doing.

Clark may not be happy about the decision made by the coaching staff, but in the end it’s the best possible scenario for him.

Now, let’s beat the Broncos!
