Three Bucs prospects out until mid-season
  • By Nate
  • March 13th, 2010

NOTE: I originally drafted this post on Wednesday, when the news first broke.

However, apparently the hiccups from FanHuddle's server switch aren't completely gone yet, as I've been unable to post the story until today. According to the Post-Gazette, pitching prospects Colton Cain, Brett Lorin and Zach Fuesser will miss about half of the 2010 season with injuries. Cain is one of the best pitching prospects in the system, and it's a bummer to lose him.

Thankfully, he was a high school draftee and is only 19 years old, so this won't hurt his status too much in the long term. Lorin was part of the trade that sent Jack Wilson to the Mariners, and he pitched very well in A-ball for both teams, posting combined numbers of an 8-5 record, 2.20 ERA,...

Some technical difficulties with the FanHuddle network have prevented me from posting as of late.

They resulted from a server switch, so hopefully that's entirely behind us as we settle in with the new servers. In my absence, the following things happened: * Spring training games started.

The Pirates got their revenge on the hated Manatees, and then promptly returned to mid-season form.

They currently hold a record of 2-4-1 (yes, ties happen in spring training) in Grapefruit League play. * Kevin Hart, apple of John Russell's eye, has thrown like garbage thus far.

His problems are the same as we saw last season: a complete lack of control and issuing lots of walks.

It's hard to tell what's going on with pitchers in spring...

Notes from Spring Training

Lots of news for the Pirates around the internet lately. First, Joel Hanrahan's MRI shows no structural damage in his elbow, which is encouraging news for the team.

Hanrahan is expected to be a valuable back-end reliever, so you want to see him back in playing shape as soon as possible. Lots of rumblings about Tony Sanchez as of late.

Firstly, Baseball America has apparently shifted their view of Sanchez's defense.

Based on this podcast (found via Bucs Dugout), they've gone from seeing him as a reach to seeing him as one of the better first rounders in the draft.

Most of the podcast is about the 2009 draft, and the relevant quote regarding Sanchez is "He's a guy who rated much higher with scouts than we would've thought, maybe, on his...

Penguins owners Lemieux, Burkle offer to buy Pirates
  • By Nate
  • February 23rd, 2010

Breaking news coming early this morning that Pittsburgh Penguins ownership are interested in buying the Pirates, and were rejected by owner Bob Nutting. The only surprising part of this move is that the offer was made in the first place. Nutting has stated repeatedly that the Pirates are not for sale, so that he rejected an unsolicited offer should surprise nobody. Of course, Lemieux and Burkle say that the offer was solicited. If that's the case, it would be news to almost everybody. I'm not saying that it's impossible that Nutting asked for an offer, as it's entirely possible that Nutting simply doesn't want the public to know the team is for sale. I find that hard to believe, though. What this really smells of to me is a PR move by Penguins...

Pirates 2009 Season Review: Steve Pearce
  • By Nate
  • February 23rd, 2010

For three straight seasons, the Pirates' former top hitting prospect has mashed in AAA, come up to the Majors, and failed. Pearce put up a line of .206/.296/.370 with 4 homers. With a career line of .207/.304/.392 in 378 plate appearances, it's not like Pearce has earned his playing time at the Major League level. Is there a future for Pearce, or is he doomed to the career of a AAAA slugger? Pearce could have some value, but it may depend more on what happens with Jeff Clement and Garrett Jones than with what he does. The fact is, Pearce will never be an MLB starter. His defense is mediocre at best, and his overall offenseive numbers are weak. It's not a recipe for success. That said, Pearce is a lefty masher to the extreme....

Pirates 2009 Season Review: Delwyn Young
  • By Nate
  • February 23rd, 2010

When the Pirates traded for Delwyn Young, it wasn't met with much attention. The deal was minor - the Pirates only sent two players to be named later. The players eventually named were minor leaguers Eric Krebs and Harvey Garcia. In Young, GM Neal Huntington saw a player who could be a useful guy off the bench as a pinch hitter, outfielder and occasional second baseman. Young quickly captured the attention of fans by putting up good numbers off the bench. He hit around .300 for most of the season. This earned him the starting job at second after the Freddy Sanchez trade. Young is hardly a prodigy at second base, and the Pirates knew as much when they named him the starter. The hope was that by working with infield instructor Perry...
