In reading this Colin Campbell’s statement yesterday, I am beginning to wonder if WCHA commissioner Bruce McLeod isn’t a Colin Campbell clone or cut from the same mold? They both have made some horrible decision this season and this was the latest Colin Campbell debacle.

“No one likes when a player like Marc Savard goes down the way he did. No one likes when a player like David Booth goes down the way he did. But we have to be consistent. I know Matt Cooke is a repeat offender, he’s been suspended twice in the last year. I can’t suspend Matt Cooke for being a repeat offender, I have to find a reason. Right now our rules say that shoulders to head are legal. Matt Cooke did not jump, and did not do anything that we found illegal in his actions even though again you don’t like what happened. I know it’s not something that Boston fans, or hockey fans would like to hear. They want justice. We feel we have to be consistent and do what we feel is right and hopefully we’ve gone to a place in our meetings today that we can eradicate plays like this in the future.”

- NHL Sr. VP of Hockey Operations, Colin Campbell
You have got to be kidding me? Think about this for a moment; the NHL just spent three days meeting in Boca Raton, Florida discussing head shots and wanting to elimiate them from the NHL and then this ruling from Colin Campbell comes down.

Seriously, is your head spinning yet? Mine is. I am not sure how I can write this blog post without using colorful and profane language to describe how feel about that disgusting piece of camel dung that is Matt Cooke. If you watch any amount of NHL hockey you will know Matt Cooke is a cheap shot artist that skates up and down the ice taking liberties with opposition players. When Challenged to a fight for his thuggery Matt Cooke will turtle and or will only fight European and other more skilled players not known for their fighting skills.

I hold Cooke in the same low regard that I held former thug Claude Lemieux and eventually they get what is rightfully coming to them, live by the sword you die by the sword. Eventually, someone is going to come to collect on the bill that past due and Matt Cooke won’t be able to duck out or turtle this time. This is what I hope happens to Mister Cooke, check out this beat down that Claude “the Fraud” took.

Cooked is what is wrong with the NHL, the lack of respect for you opponents. It was a deliberate attempt by Cooke to injure Savard, look at the video. Savard suffered a concussion on the play. Another day and another head shot in the NHL.

Dirty, vicious elbow by Matt Cooke on Marc Savard to his blind side after he shot a puck at the Pittsburgh net. Just no regard for the health and well-being of another player right there. Replays showed Cooke lowered an elbow that smashed directly into Savard’s head when he had his head turned away from the Penguins forward. The elbow knocked Savard right down to the ice. Savard was down for 10 minutes and trainers had to take the playmaking center off on a stretcher. Somehow there wasn’t a penalty called on the play, but there’s [no] way Cooke gets off without a lengthy suspension. That is the kind of play that the NHL is trying to rid their sport of, and it’s yet another injury that the B’s can’t afford.
“A guy like that has to be suspended,” the Bruins coach said. “That’s the way I see it, because it’s an elbow to the head from the blind side. That’s exactly the examples they show of what we’ve got to get out of this game. We have a guy who’s got a concussion. Our best player. He’s going to be out for a while. Check out the hit that former C.C. star Mark Stuart puts on Anze Kopitar, it’s text book clean, elbows down, didn’t go for Kopitar’s head. Then you have Wayne Simmonds dropping the gloves because Stuart put a legal hit in his teammate. I have to agree with Bob McKenzie and what he has to say, don’t we want legal hitting in the game and I think fighting after a legal hard check is senseless in this case. I would the fighting reserved for violations of the hockey code.

Immediately after the hit, the Kings’ very fine forward Wayne Simmonds immediately challenged Stuart to a fight and Stuart obliged by dropping the gloves. As it turned out, Stuart broke his pinky finger in the fight. He will be out a number of weeks now and the Bruins will be without a defenceman who was playing quite well.

And for what? Getting into a fight that was started because of a clean, open-ice hit?

Am I the only one who finds this sensibility odd? We want more hitting in the game. Or at least we don’t want to take hitting out of the game. So here’s a novel concept. When there is a really good, clean bodycheck, let’s make the person who throws the check have a fight. That sounds like a heckuva way to keep hitting in the game. (Actually, it sounds more like a way to keep fighting in the game.)

I must be getting old. I’ve never fully embraced or understood the concept of not being able to hit a star player on the other team. I mean, isn’t that the point? Make the stars earn their ice. Isn’t that what makes hockey great – that even the star players have to take some physical abuse to do their job. I am not sure when the game fully changed on this. It was probably in the 1980s when Wayne Gretzky earned special status with the Edmonton Oilers. [Read the rest of the article]

What do you think, I am not for taking fighting out of the game but I don’t think there needs to be a fight after a legal hit. If Stuart had charged Kopitar then maybe not for a legal hit.

Personally, I think that Chiarelli has done nothing to make the Bruins a contender this year. I said it before that when Kessel left the Bruins for Toronto and Chiarelli said that Wheeler, Sturm and Bergeron where going to fill the void left by Kessel I knew the Bruins were in trouble. Looks like my predictions are coming true. My grade for the Bruins GM for far this season is a “D”.

A practical man with a Harvard education, Chiarelli now founds himself in a most precarious position. He may have to do something that goes against his nature; he may have to do something purely for the sake of doing it. Last week, Chiarelli told anyone who would listen that he had no intentions of trading the Toronto selection in this year’s draft because of the depth of talent available at the top of the first round. During his weekly segment on 98.5 The Sports Hub, he went so far as to say that current Islanders rookie John Tavares (the No. 1 pick in last year’s draft) might be no better than the No. 4 overall selection in this year’s event.

By the way, Tavares is 19. He has 33 points and 17 goals this year, the latter a total unmatched by any Bruin this season. And dare we even mention that Kessel has the same number?

As encouraging as the Bruins’ efforts were over the weekend, goal-scoring remains a problem of colossal proportions. In the overtime loss to the Kings on Saturday, the Bruins had six chances to score in the shootout and managed just two tallies, by Michael Ryder and Marc Savard. Zdeno Chara, Blake Wheeler, Recchi, and Patrice Bergeron all failed.

For what it’s worth, Chiarelli last week gave no indication that the B’s were close to any deals, be it for Phaneuf, Ilya Kovalchuk or anyone else. To the contrary, Chiarelli suggested that the asking price for all trades was still much too high. (Of course, these things can change quickly.) Regardless, the addition of Phaneuf suggests the Leafs are far closer to being the Bruins than the Bruins are to being, say, the Penguins or Capitals, setting the stage for the kind of scenario that would drive the most loyal Bruins fans absolutely wild.

What if the Bruins do not make the playoffs? And what if the Leafs somehow end up finishing in front of Boston? The end result will have the Bruins picking before the Leafs following the most highly anticipated Bruins season in years, all after trading away their top goal scorer, regardless of whether Kessel wanted to be in Boston.

In another blog post I looked at the trade between the Wild and the Habs, (Guillaume Letendress for Benoit Pouliot), at first I thought it was a one sided deal, however, it would appear that both players Guillaume Latendress and Benoit Pouliot have had an resurgence in their hockey careers and are helping both of their respective teams.

Last night the Wild played and beat the Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3. The Wild victory was fueled a possessed Guillamume Latendresse who led the charge with (1g-3a-4pts). Latendresse is really on a roll, in the last four games he is (4g-5a-8pts)

Incidentally, the guy the Wild traded to the Montreal Canadians to get Latendresse, former Wild player Benoit Pouliot has only scored 4 goals in 9 games. Latendresse surpassed Pouliot’s production with the Habs in three periods of hockey. Not hard to see who got the best of that deal?

Since moving over the Montreal Canadians Benoit Pouliot has recorded (8g-1a-9tps) in 13 games. On the other side of the trade Guillaume Latendresse (13g-6a-19pts) in 26 games for the Minnesota Wild. It would appear that the trade is working out for both teams.

On Wednesday I was watching the Habs and the Blues play on my television and I couldn’t believe what I saw, Pouliout scored two goals. It was like Benoit Pouliot was a different player, energized by moving to the Canadians.

Boston Bruins center Marc Savard left Thursday night’s game against Chicago after just 28 seconds because of what appeared to be an injured right leg, and the team said he will not return.

Savard went into the side boards in the Hawks’ zone along with Chicago center Jonathan Toews on the first shift of the game. He went down to the ice awkwardly after the seemingly innocent collision and stayed there until the team’s medical staff attended to him.

Savard was helped off the ice by teammates and assisted down the runway by the team’s trainers. The Bruins said he won’t return to the game but offered no other details.[NHL.com]
