San Diego Padres Have holes to fill for 2010 Season

San Diego Padres vs Washington Nationals

The World Series is almost over and with winter meetings close to a month away, owners of all MLB teams are  in the process of making necessary managerial and coaching decisions, but more importantly they are determining their roster needs and finalizing  lists of acquisitions via Free Agency and trades and also who needs to be let go within their organizations.

With the economy still in a slump, expect many contracts to be incentive laden and relatively modest compared to prior years.  Salary arbitrations and contract waivers also play a role in comprising a roster that management has set the payroll to support in anticipation of ticket sales revenue.

Fans cannot afford to pay for tickets especially in the smaller markets as they once did, and all teams need to be cognizant of that before they overspend on new acquisitions, the trend is to develop from within the Minor League Systems while searching for one or two impact players.

According to Yahoo San Diego Padres Team Report, the San Diego Padres have fired Scouting and Player Development VP Grady Fuson and have reassigned Scouting Director Bill Gayton.

San Diego finished the season with the youngest roster in the major leagues, there were 19 rookies on the team and they are showing the rebuilding has begun for this organization.

Brian Giles missed most of the 2009 season with injuries and has played his last game as a Padre and is now a Free Agent.

Henry Blanco is also a Free Agent but he will probably be re-signed as he has provided leadership to fellow catcher Nick Hundley, the younger pitchers on the staff and  the  rookie Latin American players.

Holes to fill include acquiring a  right handed hitting center fielder, backup infielder who can play shortstop, and a catcher who would be considered an upgrade.

The decision of who will play third base also needs to be made,  Kevin Kouzmanoff or Chase Headley had been sharing third base duties in 2009.

Kouzmanoff is the defensive superior third baseman, he had a .990 fielding percentage and is a solid gold glove candidate.

Will Venable and Luis Durango had shared center field duties but the Padres are in need of defensive stability and slugging power in center field.

Padres management will be watching their team closely and will make the necessary acquisitions and changes for this rebuilding process.

Nice job Wendy, I am the Padre writer here on fan huddle, and every time I see a Padre post that I didn’t write, I do a double take- like “where did that come from?? ” too funny :)
Nice to see you on the case, the Padres are a mess, but there is hope.
Tickets sales go directly with winning around here, If The Padres win, they pack the house. Lose all year, and we all go to the beach instead.
The Chargers are still selling 60,000 plus every game because they have been winning, and we are all dirt poor compared to 5 years ago.
All the Padres have to do is not suck.
