Witnessing Greatness: Seeing Mariano Live
  • By Andrew Devereaux
  • March 11th, 2010

Every baseball fan has that one person who in 50 years they can brag about seeing live. For instance, a few Boston fans have the right to say "As a child, I saw Ted Williams in his prime." It is the same concept with Texas fans who could talk with their children about how "I saw Nolan Ryan pitch his sixth no-hitter." When it comes to the Yankees, there are many a player in which somebody could use the aforementioned statement about: Dimaggio, Mantle, Reggie, Guidry, Mattingly, among others. For me, even though many can argue that Derek Jeter has been the Yankees' biggest star since 1996, that person I wanted the ability to brag about was always Mariano Rivera.

Surprisingly enough, this wasn't due to his stature and impeccable record in the...

Yankees Spring Training Week Overview
  • By Virginia Califano

Can you believe it? The first week of Spring Training is over already for my Yankees.

In 8 days, my Yanks have played 9 games.

They have won 4 and lost 5 so far.

If you are the kind of person who just looks at numbers, you may be thinking, "Ooh...these World Champion Yankees didn't do too well in their first week." But am I freaking out? Am I panicking? Am I hyperventilating as well? Nope.

I am perfectly fine with the Yankees' first week of Spring Training.

To me, the record or results of the games don't matter (although it's always a pleasure to watch your team win).

Spring Training is a time for the pitchers to get back into groove, and to try new things.

Experiment.

Yankees Start Spring Training With Walkoff Win
  • By Virginia Califano
  • March 11th, 2010

Aahh...The Yankees are back.

It gives me such great comfort to say that.

It was a long offseason, but it's officially over now.

Our beloved Yankees played their first Spring Training game, their first baseball game since winning it all this past season.

And they picked up right where they left off.

Yes, it is so fitting: The Yankees started off their 2010 with a walkoff win. I wanted to stay home from school to see the game today, but of course my Mom wouldn't let me (ugh...parents).

Because of the severe snowstorm that hit the Northeast, my school was closed from last Wednesday to Friday.

And I had no power from Thursday till late Monday.

I didn't get to do any schoolwork over that time, so I see why my...

A-Rod Has A-rrived!
  • By Virginia Califano
  • March 11th, 2010

Imagine your name is Alex Rodriguez. You are sitting in the first base dugout of Yankee Stadium, looking out towards the 49,000+ fans getting ready for some playoff baseball. You look to your right, and you see Mark Teixeira, a man who very well may be the MVP of this Yankee team. What does this mean to you? It means that throughout the year, everybody looked towards him to get the big hits, not you. After months of members of the media and fans bashing you, making you out to be a fraud (or A-Fraud), a cheater, a laughing stock, and somebody who should be left off the team for Cody Ransom, you came back. Not only did you come back, but on the first pitch you saw in Camden Yards, a place where...

Celebration Time
  • By Virginia Califano

Einstein. Lindberg. Earnhart. Truman. Churchill. The list goes on and on with names of those fortunate enough to have a parade thrown down the Canyon of Heroes in their honor. Not one team or person has been down the Canyon more times than the Yankees have throughout the years, though. By far. With the 2009 World Series celebration in the books, that makes it nine times that the Yankees have been able to celebrate down the lower Manhattan section of Broadway, the other times being for their four Championships in '96, '98, '99, '00, as well as their two titles in '77 and '78. Another time actually came in '61, when a parade was held right before the infamous season to pay tribute to the '60 Yankees who didn't actually win the World Series...

More on the Left Field Situation
  • By Virginia Califano
  • March 11th, 2010

The Yankees have not done anything get to fill the void in left field. Yankee fans are anxious for the Yanks to make a move. I know I am. I keep saying how much I want Matt Holliday. I thought there was a chance the Yankees would get him. Of course I've learned that you shouldn't rule anything out, because the Yankees are full of surprises, but I have a feeling the Yankees are not interested in Holliday anymore. Thanks to Boras, his price is way too high. One name that was not as big as Holliday was Marlon Byrd. He hit .283 with 20 HR and 89 RBI last season, his HR and RBI totals being career bests. But the Chicago Cubs signed Byrd to a 3 year, $15 million contract...
