The Mets front office actually made a good move this last week. Pretty hard to believe, I know. But they made one. They signed Wally Backman to be the manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones. Now although this seems like a small move, and Backman has pretty limited managerial experience but his style of the play is what the Mets need in the minors. He played hard, he played to win and when hired he said that is what he will expect from his players.
The minors are place for players to learn not just skills but learn what it takes to be a proffesional baseball player. It is a place to learn the value of playing hard and the importance of winning. Players like Tom Glavine, have critized in the past the Mets minor league players for not caring about losing. That is just unacceptable and hopefully Backman can reverse this.
This philosophy to have is good to have at the Brooklyn level because all of the draft picks and other highly touted prospects generally make a stop in Brooklyn.
If he does well, maybe eventually he becomes the firey type of manager in the Mets clubhouse (and I’m not saying we need that, thats a discussion for another day).
