Disturbing Situation: Who is the real GM?
  • By eteichman

This story has been out for a few days and its pretty unsettling. When Peter Gammons was talking about the Mets, he said that Jeff Wilpon, not Minaya, is the GM of the Mets. That decisions have to go through Wilpon, and that Minaya is essentially a puppet to take these bad media blows.

Whoa.

Talk about a story that can undermine an entire offseason. Whether the media spreads this story or not, this is not a good situation for any front office to have (especially considering all of its other problems from this year and last year). While reading this though I was reminded about what made the 1986 Mets happen from the office side.

Now I wasn’t alive back then, so mostly what I know about the ‘86 squad is from family members, movies, articles and of course the book The Bad Guys Won, but when Frank Cashen was hired ast the Mets GM in 1980 he was told to put together a winning squad. That is what he did.

When Minaya was hired, he was told the same thing, and intially he did but then after 2006 the Mets started to treat the symptoms of problems rather than the cause thus getting 07, 08 and 09. I’m not placing these problems and faults on Jeff Wilpon, but from a business perspective, Wilpon has to realize no matter how good or bad a GM is, undermining a GM can and will lead to nothing good.

I’m just hoping this situation clears up soon, that Wilpon gives Minaya some space and Minaya can actually address the problems that this team has.

What a disaster. The only saving grace is that Peter Gammons is usually wrong about most things and the Mets HAVE to make at least one big move to save the fan base from jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge.

This organization needs a makeover more than Joan Rivers. I’d really like to see the Wilpon’s either sell the team, fire the GM and the Manager or completely stop interfering with the team at all. Since none of this will happen 2010 will see only a little improvement from this year and next year at this time or perhaps even by mid-season we will be replacing both the GM and the Manager.
