The AFL and the Mets Future Gets Underway
  • By eteichman

Its hard to believe sitting in College Park, Maryland, a city that at this time of year doesn’t usually get below 50 but today it will get to below 43, that there is still Mets baseball going on right now but there is.

The Mets prospects started playing in the AFL yesterday with a star performance from teh 2008 first overall New York Mets draft pick, Ike Davis. Davis went 4-6 with two doubles and a grand slam. He had 6 RBI’s in his fall 09 debut.  He wasn’t even the only Met yesterday with a good day as Tejada went 2-5 and Duda also went 2-5. All three are members of the Surprise Rafters (the team Mets prospects go to for the fall) and they won 17-4.

One of the Mets star pitching prospects, Mejia,  will get a start today.

On the Major League side, this of course will have implications in terms of  Murphy, free agents, etc. However, on topics like this, I like to wait a little bit to open up the discussion. For example, if Davis goes 0 for his next 25, then people won’t be high on him to play first base for the amazin’s next year. I know there are a lot of people out there right now calling for Davis to start after this one performance,  but lets wait to make a rational decision. (That being said, his play suggests that he will have more days like this and could very well possibly make the decision of who the Mets put on first base next year a tough one).

Thanks for the Ike Davis info…AFL is a strong gauge on a players skills look at Hanson, Scherzer, Quentin etc the list goes on and on. Should we panic if he goes 0-25? No, but we should not annoint him if he goes 20-25. We should be happy as Mets fans that he does well and let the organizational people make the decisions of how fast to push him the bigs…Love to keep seeing AFL stats!
