Tampa Bay Rays
The Future of Carl Crawford, the Rays, et al
Typically the Rays mantra has been, “Look to the Future.” Ugh, the F word. No, not that one. Future. The future was always out there, and the Rays seemed to creep closer and closer with each passing season. First we waited for the arrival of one Carl Crawford. Then came Delmon Young and BJ Upton—two guys featured at one time in Sports Illustrated as the young faces of a “new” franchise who would lead it to the promised land. They were... Read more

A Hammerin' Hank of Their Very Own
- By Robert Cox

The Rays made one of their patented moves Monday, adding Utility Man Hank Blalock to the Spring Training roster.
I think it is a great move.
I was a proponent of picking up Blalock earlier this year when it appeared as if the 29-year-old veteran would be without a team when Spring Training started.
He seemed to be an affordable and reliable option at DH should Pat Burrell do what he did in 2009 and he would be a stronger corner infield bat off the bench than Dan Johnson would be in case the Rays have some injury issues in 2010.
It seems that Andrew Friedman was of the same mind.
Blalock signed a 1-year $925,000 incentive-laden minor league contract.
Unfortunately, it seems that the Rays do not see him as somebody who can legitimately...

Cubs Final Two Rotation Spots Wide Open
- By Pat De Marco
- March 13, 2010 12:16:46 PM
With just three weeks left in spring training, the Cubs final two rotation spots are still wide open. Cubs left-hander Ted Lilly is expected to be ready sometime in May but until then the Cubs are looking for two starters. So far this Spring Carlos Silva has had one real good outing and another very poor outing. On Thursday, Silva took a big step in securing the number five spot throwing three scoreless innings. On Friday left-handed starter Tom Gorzelanny gave up just one run over three innings but did struggle with his control walking three and throwing a wild pitch. Also on Friday, Jeff Samardzija was hit hard giving up 4 runs in just two innings. Another candidate is Sean Marshall. However, the left handed Marshall was very successful out of the Cubs pen last year, it's hard...
Fed Up With Upton
- By Robert Cox

I'm done with BJ.
Sorry.
I know it sounds blasphemous to give up on a 25-year-old Center Fielder with a rocket arm and sky-high potential, but I am.
I have a good friend who preaches patience with Bossman, Jr.
to me whenever he can, but I'm done. He tries to make me feel guilty, but then I watch the debacle that is a BJ Upton at bat and I suddenly feel good about my stance.
Before you condemn me as being an impatient idiot (which I often get thrown at me) take into account that I have been one of BJ’s staunchest supporters over the years.
I do love the guy, believe it or not.
But boy oh boy has he taken us for a ride.
Back when he was a Durham Bull BJ was embroiled in...
2009 Review: Adam Rosales
- By sweaver
- October 23, 2009 07:31:14 PM
Adam Rosales quickly became a fan favorite in Cincinnati with his combination of all-out hustle and high stirrups, showing a complete sense of joy at the simple playing of the game. The Queen City's good burghers took that to heart, and began calling him Pete Rose-ales, after their favorite son. However, his production at the major league level did not match his enthusiasm. Chicago native Rosales was drafted out of Western Michigan University as a shortstop in 2005, in the 12th round. He made his way steadily up the minor league ladder with a few bumps, but hit .289 overall in the minors including a .287 mark in Louisville in 2008, then got off to a hot start in 2009 and got a callup when 3B Edwin Encarnacion went on the...
Disappointing Cubs Season Did Have a Few Good Moments
- By Pat De Marco
- September 29, 2009 10:07:13 PM
With just a few days left in the regular season, I thought this would be a good time look back at my top 10 moments of the Chicago Cubs 2009 season. Let’s be honest, it was a very disappointing season. That said, we’ll have plenty of time to dissect this season and look forward to the off season.
For now, let’s take a look at my top 10 Cubs moments of 2009.
10) Opening Day: Say what you want, but winning on opening day is always special.
Alfonso Soriano hit the second pitch of the season out of the park and Carlos Zambrano cruised throwing 6 solid innings giving up just one run. The Cubs defeated the Astros 4-2.
9) September 24, 2009: If you’re not going to attend the party, you might as...
