Looking at Eastern League Pitchers by Age
- By Doug Gray
- November 24th, 2009
Yesterday we looked at the Eastern League hitters, but today we flip sides and check into how the pitchers have performed over the last year in the league.
I kept the data to pitchers between twenty one and twenty four years old.
The younger groups combined for fewer than half as many innings as the twenty one year old group.
The ERA fluctuated up and down, but the WHIP got worse with each increase with the exception of the 22 year olds who were the worst of all the groups.
The walk rate and strikeout rates were up and down as well.
It is painfully obvious that the 21 year old group of pitchers were clearly the best among these groups of pitchers in the Eastern League this season....
Looking at Eastern League hitters by age

Its been a bit of a layoff here.
Hopefully there aren't many issues in the future like that one.
Anyways, we are going to look at how hitters in the Eastern League performed by age groups in 2009. First will be a look at the traditional slash stats.
The batting average went up slightly for each age group except the 22 year olds who were well above the other groups.
There were no trends in the OBP department or the in the slugging department.
Lets see how the peripherals stacked up.
The youngest group had both the highest walk rate and strikeout rate to go with the second highest power rating.
The strikeout rate is the only category where we saw a trend as every increase in age saw a decrease in...
Looking at Southern League Pitchers by Age

- November 17th, 2009
Yesterday we looked at how the hitters performed in the Southern League and there really weren't many trends on that side of the ball.
Lets take a look at how the pitchers fared by age and if any trends were present.
There was not enough data for the 20 year old group who had four pitchers combine for just over 125 innings, so we are just looking at the 21-24 year old pitchers.
The ERA doesn't show us any type of trend and the WHIP actually got worse with age.
The strikeout rate and the walk rates didn't really show much of a trend either.
It seems that as we get higher up the ladder we are seeing less and less trends in the overall data....
Looking at Gulf Coast League pitchers by age

Much like yesterday's introduction to the series of taking a look at how players perform in each league by age group, today looks at the pitchers from the Gulf Coast League. The statistics that are used are walk percentage (walks divided by total batters faced), strikeout percentage (strikeouts divided b total batters faced), Strikeout/Walk rate and ERA. While ERA isn't the best metric to use to determine the skill of a pitcher, I still included it in the data. (Background Photo: Jim Donten) Like the conventional wisdom suggests as the players tend to get older, they also tend to get better. The increase in rates however is very slight from one group to the next among the rookie level pitchers. While there was a limited number of 17 year olds in the league (just...
Looking at Appalachian League hitters by age

The Appy League did not have a very good set off offensive players on the whole this year. There were several players who certainly stood out, but as the graphs will show you below, the league as a whole didn't do much at the plate. There really isn't much going on here in terms of a trend by the age groups. In fact the 18 year old group (13 players) had the high OPS of any grouping. This is the first league so far where there really isn't a linear connection to the age group and a trend upward. What is really interesting here is that overall, as the player group got older, they showed less power. That goes against everything we know about players historically who tend to show more and...
Looking at Gulf Coast League hitters by age

This is the first post on the new site that I really hope you will come back to visit. One thing that often gets talked about with minor leaguers is their age relative to the league that they are playing in. While there are some good things to take from 'a player is young for his league', we often don't have the context for what a player of that age does on average for the league. What I decided to do was go ahead and gather all of the stats and ages for each player in the leagues throughout the minor leagues and run the numbers. Below is a graph of the average slash line (AVG/OBP/SLG) by age for the Gulf Coast League. One note that I wanted to make is...
