Jonny Flynn and Corey Brewer: The Future Guards?
  • By Matthew Hayden
  • October 25th, 2009

The title itself is enough to stirr up discussions within the Timberwolves community, but after this preseason, it’s becoming apparent that Jonny Flynn and Corey Brewer make one hell of a duo.

They play off of each other so well, and yet their play styles are similar in some ways.

NCAA Second Round: Arizona State Sun Devils v Syracuse Orange

Speed

They both play at a speed faster than everyone elses, which is why on a fastbreak, they are virtually unstoppable for one,  even two defenders easily.

On the fastbreak, both are excellent passers and feed off one anothers energy. Because they are both individually fast, it often times confuses the defense into thinking that the ball handler is going to score the ball, while the significant other is on the other side waiting for the ball handlers reaction to the defense, to execute the pass or the finish..

Defense

Both are defensive guards. Jonny Flynn is an annoying pest on the defensive end, who doesn’t give up, and uses his speed and quickness to excel in on the ball defense. Jonny Flynn plays the passing lane’s pretty well, and had a 3-steal game once in preseason. He never frays away from contact, and he’s built like a running back beast.

But Corey Brewer on the other hand, does it all, plain and simple. A 6′9” SG/SF that can lock you down, steal the ball (three 3 steal games in preseason), block shots and is havoc for other guards. The only way to score on Brewer is to overpower him, but even Carmelo Anthony would tell you it isn’t the easiest thing to do.

Athleticism

They both love to dunk the ball. Corey Brewer loves to slam it down with two hands and hang on the rim, while Jonny Flynn loves the one handed tomahawk dunk to make his defenders look like their drink has been spiked.

Shooting

While some will argue with me, Jay-Z says it best “men lie, women lie, numbers don’t”. Corey Brewer shot 40% from the 3-point line in preseason, and Jonny Flynn while he didn’t shoot the ball that well in the preseason, in the summer league he shot almost 60% from the 3-point line. Both are developing shooters, but if you give them a year or two, they’ll be lighting it up from “3″ better than you think.

Jonny Flynn has a very fluid and solid stroke, while Corey Brewer has been noted to have “very good shooting machanics”.

Charisma

Jonny Flynn and Corey Brewer are both guys that love to have fun, but on the court, it’s all about business. One reason why Flynn was taken so high was because of his leadership qualities, and was arguably in the top 5 leaders in college basketball last season.

Corey Brewer has an incredible upbeat personality, and always has positive things to say. There’s never a dull moment with him, and just like Jonny Flynn, he’s always smiling.

Upside

Ultimately, if you play Brewer and Flynn a-lot in the regular season, you can expect to see 30+ points from them consecutively. They both have so much upside that it’s ridiculous. Jonny Flynn has been compared to a shorter Deron Williams, and Corey Brewer is looking like a “Trevor Ariza” kinda guy.

Are they the future guards of the Wolves? Only time will tell. But something tells me that that they are.
