Five Moves For a 2010 Milwaukee Brewers’ Playoff Run
  • By jessemotiff
  • November 24th, 2009

After a very disappointing 2009 season, fans of the Milwaukee Brewers are anticipating GM Doug Melvin to make several moves this winter involving the pitching staff to bring the team back to prominence in 2010.

Regardless of the pitching acquisitions, the Brewers will need some luck as well as several players having career seasons to achieve the success they did in 2008. The Brewers have the talent already on their roster to compete and win the NL Central.

In addition to the pitchers acquired for the starting rotation, there are five keys in 2010 the Brewers must do in order to bring playoff baseball back to Milwaukee. Make Mat Gamel a full-time starter Mat Gamel has bounced back-and-forth between the Brewers and the Nashville Sounds over the past two seasons.

The inconsistent playing...

What Does the Trade Market Look Like for Mat Gamel?

When the Brewers traded JJ Hardy for Carlos Gomez, they sealed their fate as to how they will acquire starting pitching this winter.

Other than John Lackey, the free agent class for pitchers is rather underwhelming, but Brewers' GM Doug Melvin is determined to find two starters on the market. The Brewers still have players they could trade for pitching, most notably Mat Gamel.

Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi report that while a trade isn't out of the question, it is unlikely to happen unless the Brewers find another team willing to offer comparable pitching talent that is the equivalent of Gamel. In the report, they note the logjam the Brewers could have in the infield.

Rickie Weeks and Casey McGehee will enter the season as the starters at second and...

Would Edwin Jackson Be a Good Fit For The Milwaukee Brewers?

Rumors have surfaced in recent days that Milwaukee Brewers' GM Doug Melvin has talked with Tigers' GM Dave Dombrowski over the possibility of acquiring starting pitcher Edwin Jackson.

Jackson is being shopped in a cost-cutting move by the Tigers. Jackson is coming off the best statistical season of his career, and he is under team control for two more years.

He made $2.2 million in 2009. It was a tale of two seasons for the young righty.

He was named to his first All-Star team in July with a 7-4 record and a 2.52 ERA. By the end of the season, his ERA had risen to 3.62 with a record of 13-9.

Over his final 12 starts, he gave up three runs or less only three times.

He finished the season with almost...

Finding a Home For JJ Hardy

By now it has become common knowledge even among the most novice Milwaukee Brewer fan that JJ Hardy will be dealt this offseason. Alcides Escobar has been groomed to become the starter, and the job will be his from day one in 2010. Hardy had an awful 2009, that saw him demoted in August to Triple-A. He spent enough time in the minors that his service time this year won't count towards his free agency eligibility, so whichever team trades for him will have his services for two years and not one. The Brewers won't get the return for Hardy that they would like since he scuffled this year, but he is still young enough with plenty of past success to still get quality pitching returning to Milwaukee. It is quite likely...

Brew Crew Intro

Damn! Despite all of the drama, injuries, and inconsistencies, the Milwaukee Brewers still managed to finish just a notch shy of .500, ending 2009 with a 80-82 record. I am getting ahead of myself.. My name is Nick Petakas, and I will be one of your Brewers beat writers. Seems fitting that we launch as baseball comes to a close, but what some don't know is that this is arguably the best time of the year for seam head nerds such as myself! There's fall league action that the Brewers (especially) will have to keep a watchful eye on, and this will indeed be a busy off season for the squad as they will have to seriously get after some starting pitching. (Anybody hear about the Prince for Jurrjens rumor?!) The Brew Crew...
