Starting off with a Bang: Marlins beat up on ‘Canes.
  • By John
  • March 4th, 2010

There aren't many better feelings than that feeling when Spring Training rolls around.

It means the winter and the cold has gone away and that baseball is back in town for the next seven months. The Marlins started their 2010 spring training season on the right foot even though it was against a college baseball powerhouse in the Miami Hurricanes. Hanley Ramirez and Jai Miller each had three-run homers in a 19-3 rout of the Hurricanes.

Starting pitcher Ricky Nolasco pitched two innings and gave up only one hit while striking out two. Freshman pitcher Jerad Grundy for the Hurricanes gave up six runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Allowing your freshman pitcher in their first start to go against a major league team could be used as confidence building, but when the second...

All-Star game in South Florida? Count me in.

With the $515 million stadium being completed in 2012, there could only be one way to christen it.

An old fashioned MLB All-star game. Even if won't be until 2015. Marlins President David Sampson is lobbying the location to Commissioner Bud Selig in hopes that the city of South Florida could see it's first all-star game.

It was originally supposed to receive the 2000 all-star game after being rewarded it in 1995, but in 1998, then-NL President Len Coleman took it away and gave it to Atlanta because they had a "new" ballpark. No excuses now, three years old is just about as new as it gets.

The stadium is 22% complete and looks to be on par to be finished and ready for Marlins baseball by the 2012 season. Next year's all-star game...

He’s a keeper: Marlins sign Josh Johnson to lucrative deal.

For the second time in three years, the Florida Marlins have managed to not trade away one of their top players and showing signs of a trustworthy organization that will not let you down and keep your favorite Marlins around. Hopefully I’m not being over zealous. The Marlins managed to hook ace starting pitcher Josh Johnson to a four year-$39 million deal and keep him out of the free agent market for another two years.

Johnson and Hanley Ramirez, who was signed to a six year-$70 million deal in 2008, now have the most considerably largest deals of any Marlin. The deal comes two days after the players’ union complained that the Marlins needed to increase their payroll, which has been the lowest in Major League Baseball for the past four seasons. Johnson is...

Fish Fry: The 2008-'09 Florida Marlins Season Review
  • By John
  • January 14th, 2010

It all started out so promising. The Marlins rocketed out to an 11-1 start by sweeping three of the first four series of the seasons, and winning two of three in the only series they did not sweep. Not only that, but the record was posted against division rivals such as the  New York Mets, Atlanta Braves, and Washington Nationals, including sweeping the Nats twice in the 11-1 stretch. The reality check came in really soon and really quick on the Marlins. They followed up their quick start by dropping it's next seven and losing 13 of it's next 17 games. They went from unfamiliar territory as part of the MLB elite and ended up in their usual spot as an average team looking to fight for a wild card spot. Perhaps...

Ricky Nolasco to stay at least one more year, signs deal with Marlins
  • By John
  • January 14th, 2010

Surprising enough, the Fish are not letting this one get away. The Marlins made sure to keep one of it's more impressive starting pitchers in Ricky Nolasco by signing the right-hander to a one-year deal worth $3.8 million. Nolasco is coming off of an up and down 2009 campaign where he finished 13-9 with a 5.06 ERA. He did manage to lead the team in strikeouts with 195. Nolasco struggled early last season posting a 2-5 record before being sent down to the minor leagues to get into the rhythm he was in the previous year when he finished with a 15-8 record. Nolasco came back from the minor's a new man, including a four game stretch throughout June and July where he won four consecutive games. After the 2-5 start, he...
