OFFENSIVE GRADE: C-

When it comes to consistent offensive production there are few who come close to Miguel Cabrera. He has driven in 100 or more six seasons in a row and topped 33 homers in five of those six years. He does lose some value, as he now qualifies at first base only. Johnny Damon will be his usual solid top of the order presence and should crack the 100 runs scored and 15+ homer and steal levels. I am usually not keen on rookie position players, but Austin Jackson and Scott Sizemore should be useful in 2010. Both have clearly been given the opportunity, especially with Jackson hitting leadoff. Sizemore has some pop and I think is flying under the rookie radar at the moment which is a good thing. I am not sure where Ryan Raburn falls into this lineup with Damon now on board, but he had a great finish to ’09 and he will hit his way into the lineup if he gets a shot.

Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen are over the hill and should be avoided. I am not buying the Brandon Inge power surge of ’09. He is a below average offensive player, don’t be fooled into thinking otherwise. If Adam Everett or Gerald Laird are in your fantasy lineup it better be in a 16 team AL only league, and even then you probably went wrong somewhere.

ROTATION GRADE: B-

Justin Verlander found his “mojo” again in 2009 and he is a great choice to lead your fantasy rotation. Expect 15+wins, 200+K’s and a nice 3.50 ERA…a great keeper league choice. Max Scherzer has an electric arm and I think Arizona made a mistake moving him this offseason. There was speculation that he was an injury risk, but he through 170 innings last year and perfomed well overall. He is no riskier than any other pitcher and his strikeout abilities are worth a strong early look in your draft. If Rick Porcello can increase his strikeout totals he has a chance to be a fantasy ace someday. As of now, think back end starter and enjoy a decent ERA and double digit wins. All signs are that Jeremy Bonderman is finally healthy and if he truly is he could be the best sleeper pitcher in this year’s draft. Bonderman has great strikeout potential and could pitch like a number one or two starter for the cost of a late bench spot. Armando Galarraga, Nate Robertson and Dontrelle Willis will all get a shot at the fifth starter slot.

BULLPEN GRADE: A-

Jose Valverde has the closer mentality and the power arm to go with it. He is a good source of saves in 2010 with nice secondary numbers.

CONCLUSION:

This is a transition year for the Tigers and there is a lot of youth here to get excited about. Be patient with them and you will be rewarded long term.

Sleeper: Conor Jackson, Ian Kennedy

OFFENSIVE GRADE: B-

Justin Upton has the tools to be what Ken Griffey Jr. was in the ‘90’s. He is that good. In all keeper leagues you should be pursuing Upton before he gets locked up and you miss out. 30/30 seasons are within reach and 40/40 might be possible someday. It all depends upon health and his support. Mark Reynolds provides Upton protection and showed he is a legit 40 homer threat, but 200+ strikeouts should have points leaguers running for the hills. Adam LaRoche will stabilize the middle of the order as should the return of the steady, yet unspectacular Conor Jackson. The emergence of Miguel Montero is good news for owners trying to find help behind the plate. His power is legit if you look at his minor league stats.

Stephen Drew is your classic overhyped youngster and as time has gone by Drew has proven he is not restaurant quality offensive production. Chris Young will always have trouble maintaining contact and should be avoided. Look for Gerardo Parra to cut into his playing time. The D’Backs are rolling the dice with Kelly Johnson, but you shouldn’t unless you snatch him off the waiver wire if he has a hot April.

ROTATION GRADE: B-

Dan Haren is a great fantasy starter and his rocky finish is more a product of being on a bad team than arm concerns…full steam ahead on Haren. Brandon Webb seemed like the perfect pitcher to draft if you were looking for stability, but sadly Webb proved human in 2009. Monitor his progress this spring and draft wisely. Webb is as good as they come when healthy so ’09 could be a harbinger of bad times ahead or just a blip on the radar. It is too soon to tell. Edwin Jackson has a live arm but I am not buying his turnaround. You can bet owners will pay for his ’09 stats, but you can do much better elsewhere even though he has made the switch to the NL. Ian Kennedy is a nice deep sleeper and getting out of New York will be a good thing for him. He reminds me of Bob Tewksbury, another Yankee cast away who went on to have a nice career. The fifth spot is anyone’s guess; Billy Buckner or up and comer Jarrod Parker most likely.

BULLPEN GRADE: C-

Chad Qualls is not worth getting too excited about but he doesn’t have a real threat to his throne.

CONCLUSION:

This team swings and misses way too much for my liking. All or nothing is death in head to head leagues.

Boom: Kendry Morales, Jered Weaver

Bust: Juan Rivera, Scott Kazmir

Sleeper: Brandon Wood, Howie Kendrick

OFFENSIVE GRADE: B

Despite a brilliant 2009 season, Kendry Morales is still undervalued. He has great power, hits with runners in scoring position and is a threat to win a batting title. The Angels now have their middle of the order presence to replace Val Guerrero. Torii Hunter is still a 25/25 outfielder but remember he is getting older. Speaking of oldies but goodies, Hideki Matsui brings his RBI bat with him to Los Angeles and will no doubt continue to be a solid run producer and be a full time DH. Bobby Abreu had a renaissance in ’09, but keep in mind he was playing for a contract. I would be surprised to see him top 30 steals again. Eric Aybar was a nice surprise at short last year. He can fill the void if you miss out on the big names and want to be patient and fill your middle infield slots in the later rounds.

Howie Kendrick has been automatic in his young career. He struggles mightily in the first half, gets sent down and tears it up down the stretch. If he can put his bad starts behind him Kendrick will be an impact fantasy second baseman. Brandon Wood seems to be pacing in Kendry Morales’ footsteps as Mike Scioscia refused to let him get a legit shot with the big club even though he destroyed minor league pitching. Wood has real power and now a real position. Keep an eye on him. Your cohorts will forget just how much talent this youngster has. If you are desperate for some cheap power Mike Napoli can help at catcher but he is not recommended long term and Juan Rivera is not as good as he played last year. He has bust written all over him.

ROTATION GRADE: B-

Jered Weaver pitched like an ace most of the year and he will carry the load for the Angels in 2010. You have to like what you saw out of him and he is a double digit win lock. Scott Kazmir did improve under the Angels’ watch, but I am still very skeptical of his ability to stay on the mound and throw more than five innings at a clip. He just throws way too many pitches. Newly acquired Joel Pineiro has a lot to prove and I think he will be 80% of what he was in 2009 which is worth owning but he is not a difference maker. Joe Saunders is a decent roto arm for wins and ERA but not in points leagues unless he has two very favorable matchups in the same week. Ervin Santana is coming off arm trouble and should be a better pick this season, but do not expect the 2008 model…that is likely discontinued.

BULLPEN GRADE: B-

Brain Fuentes might have piled on the saves but he was shaky in many outings. Fernando Rodney will either push him to be better or push him out of the ninth inning. Draft then both if you can.

CONCLUSION:

This revamped Angels squad has some nice depth and some old standbys that can still get the job done.

Joe Mauer is the undisputed king of catchers and is a legit top 5 pick in my opinion based on the drop off in the position. A .330 BA with 200 hits, 100 runs, 30 homers and 100 RBI seems like a good bet. Justin Morneau is a perennial 30+/100+ first basemen and a great steady selection on any team. Denard Span blends athleticism and baseball acumen to defy his billing time and again. There are few outfielders that will out produce Span for his draft position. Guys like Span go a long way in deep leagues. Orlando Hudson is a great choice at second base as the two-hole hitter in 2010. He could break 100 runs scored if he stays healthy. J.J. Hardy is not done yet and Ron Gardnehire could be just what the doctor ordered. The talent is there and now he is in an environment where he will have leadership and support around him.

Michael Cuddyer and Jason Kubel both had career years in 2009 so I would expect a slight regression more so with Cuddyer as he is older and his production has been inconsistent over his career. Delmon Young is still a kid, but he has yet to make a strong impression and might lose at bats with the addition of Jim Thome. Thome’s presence could keep Kubel in the outfield more this season and Delmon would be the odd man out. You might want to handcuff your Twins outfielders this year. Brendan Harris at third base is not worth a spot even in the deepest of leagues.

ROTATION GRADE: B-

Scott Baker might not be the name on the tip of your tongue on draft day, but a savvy owner will know he is as good a bet for 15 wins and 160K’s as anybody else available in the middle rounds. Kevin Slowey is improving every year and I would expect him to put up his best season. Keep an eye on him this spring. If he is healthy draft him and enjoy this masterful young control pitcher. Carl Pavano had a nice stretch with Minnesota, but I am not buying it. Too many owners have been burned by him before and there are plenty of fish in the sea. Nick Blackburn and Glen Perkins are spot starters.

Then of course there is Francisco Liriano who struggled after his surgery the last two seasons with little results to show for it. He dazzled in the winter league this year and could finally be 100% healthy. He is a big question mark, but when it comes to risks he is one that I take because the upside is a fantasy ace.

BULLPEN GRADE: A

Joe Nathan is as good as it gets despite the post season flop.

CONCLUSION:

Warning: The new ballpark might affect this team in 2010 since now the elements are in play. It could be better for pitchers and tougher on hitters as it will be awfully cold in April and September.

The Twins are loaded and their guys will cost you far less than big market stars.

Carlos Lee and Lance Berkman both had down years in ’09. Berkman is becoming more fragile with age and is more likely to have a .280 25/90 season than a .300 35/100 one. Carlos Lee on the other hand is still a very solid player and should be a lock to drive in 100 runs. If you want consistency look no farther than Lee. The real breakout star of this team will be Hunter Pence. He has improved his plate discipline and is a nice 25/25 candidate. Pence is a great value this year.

Michael Bourn’s speed is real but I am not a believer in his on base percentage turnaround quite yet. Jeff Keppinger is a bench player forced into a starting role. Kaz Matsui and Pedro Feliz are waiver wire pickups should tragedy strike. J.R. Towles cannot hit major league pitching and Humberto Quintero is not much of an upgrade

ROTATION GRADE: C

Roy Oswalt is as tough as nails and you can bet he will be back with a vengeance in 2010. Figure 15 wins and 160K’s with an ERA around 3.60 closer to his career average. He will be better prepared physically than in past years. Wandy Rodriguez blossomed into an ace winning 14 games with a 3.02 ERA and 193K’s. Still much better at home (2.08 ERA) versus the road (4.05), Wandy was predictable if nothing else. He is a good middle of the rotation starter, not an anchor. Brett Myers wanted out of Philly bad and got his wish this offseason. I would stash him on my bench in the off chance he regains his old form. His arm is still live, but his brain is in question. Bud Norris is just 25 and should be better in 2010. Brian Moehler…next!

BULLPEN GRADE: F

Matt Lindstrom is a disaster. Who cares if you can 100 mph straight down the pipe? A 5.89 ERA and a .289 BAA is not what you want in the ninth inning. Look for Brandon Lyon to close and he is no picnic either.

CONCLUSION:

Lee, Pence and Berkman should have nice seasons at the plate and look for the return of Roy Oswalt.

Aaron Hill and Adam Lind were a breath of fresh air for Jays fans in 2009. Lind slowly made his march into the middle of the order after yo-yoing between Toronto and AAA the last two seasons. He looks like a perennial .300/100/30/100 outfielder, which are becoming harder to find this days. Hill blew away any and all expectations by slugging 36 homers, driving in 108 runs and scoring 103. Not even his own momma believes he can repeat that feat in 2010, but that should temper his value enough to make him worthy of drafting in the early rounds. He is not quite a franchise player yet. Travis Snider looks like the next Jays hitting star to take the stage. Look for a breakout year similar to Adam Lind with a bit lower average.

Vernon Wells and his immovable contract will clog up the Jays outfield for years to come. He will never become the player you want him to be, so let him go! Ditto for Edwin Encarnacion. Shortstop Alex Gonzalez is not worth drafting nor is catcher John Buck or utility man Jose Bautista. Lyle Overbay should eventually lose his situation to Brett Wallace if he hits enough at AAA to start the year. Randy Ruiz is a suspiciously late bloomer who could catch or DH. Ruiz hit 10 homers in 33 games and was 25/106 at AAA Las Vegas. He hit .320 the last two years in the minors. Keep an eye on Ruiz, he could be another Nelson Cruz.

ROTATION GRADE: C-

Life after Roy Halladay begins in Toronto but the Jays have some arms to hang their hopes on. Rickey Romero won 13 games and looks like a dependable back end fantasy starter. Shaun Marcum and Dustin McGowan pitched like potential aces in the making before injuries struck. Look for Marcum to bounce back quicker in 2010. A change of scenery could be exactly what the doctor ordered for Brandon Morrow who is still young enough to turn his career around. Mark Rzepczynski has real strikeout ability and is a nice sleeper pick after sporting a 3.67 ERA in 60+IP last year. Kyle Drabek should be in the rotation around the all star break and has a bright future. He is cut from the Roy Oswalt mold as far as size and approach.

BULLPEN GRADE: C

Scott Downs and Jason Frasor could split the duties of closer but Frasor is ahead going into spring. Handcuff them together on draft day and keep an eye on newly acquired Kevin Gregg.

CONCLUSION:

Some great pitching sleepers and a few hitters to target up north. Not the best group, but some worthy points of interest.

Boom: Nelson Cruz, Neftali Feliz

OFFENSIVE GRADE: A

If you love offense then Texas is for you. There are a myriad of sluggers and speedsters in Arlington and no shortage of runs to be scored this season. Even though he hit .250, Ian Kinsler was a 30/30 second basemen and they don’t grow on trees. He still has a shot to be the best at the position by year’s end. Josh Hamilton was poised to be a superstar, but his many injuries kept him off the field for half a season and limited his power. It is not a matter of talent, but a question of whether or not Hamilton can stay healthy mentally and physically. He is a worthy gamble but at a sensible price. Nelson Cruz hit 30 homeruns in less than 130 games. He is prone to slumps (.193 BA in June) but he does have real power and should benefit from having Hamilton in the lineup fulltime. Vlad Guerrero should also experience a renaissance in Texas as their fulltime DH. He has a lifetime OPS of 1.175 which is most likely attributed to the poor Texas rotation, but still you have to expect him to be comfortable taking his massive cuts in Arlington. Michael Young was as steady as ever hitting .322 with 22 dingers in his first year at the hot corner. Not too shabby! Elvis Andrus improved in the second half of last year and was able to raise his BA and OBP which bode well for him in 2010.

I know Chris Davis played well after being sent down to AAA and was able to post a solid .308/.338/.496 line upon his return, but he still struck out 36 times in 36 games after the break and that is just too many. Justin Smoak is a natural hitter and is ready to take a crack at the job should Davis’ inconsistencies continue. Julio Borbon could steal 50 bases with a .300 average but he has little else to offer. Jarrod Saltalamacchia is coming off an injury and Taylor Teagarden was unimpressive with the bat in his short time. I would not be shocked to see Max Ramirez end up with some at bats at the catcher position considering the logjam of mediocrity.

ROTATION GRADE: D

There is no doubt about Rich Harden’s ability, but his durability is always suspect and with good cause. He has made 30 starts just once in his career and has never thrown 200 innings….ever! He is a luxury item and should not be counted on. With smoke and mirrors, Scott Feldman won 17 games last year and had an ERA around 4.00, but keep in mind his minor league stats are not too impressive. Double digit wins would be surprising. Tommy Hunter is still young enough to show promise after a decent 2009. Brandon McCarthy and Derek Holland don’t figure to help fantasy owners much. Neftali Feliz on the other hand is a bright shining star and this flamethrower will be the best pitcher on the staff whether he starts or closes. He has easy 100 mph velocity and is an all-star in the making.

BULLPEN GRADE: D

Frank Francisco is a prime candidate to lose his closer gig. Chris Ray, Feliz and Darren O’Day could all challenge for the honor.

CONCLUSION:

Offensively there are a ton of great choices, comeback possibilities, young studs and five category contributors. Outside of Neftali Feliz the Rangers pitching is generic.

The Braves offense does not have that one dominant offensive force, but what they lack in big names they make up for in depth. Brian McCann is about as good an offensive catcher as you can find. He is in the prime of his career and should crack the 30/100 plateau in 2010. Yunel Escobar is getting better every year and he has the size to develop power as soon as this season. He is a definite breakout candidate and a great pick even if he repeats his ’09 stats. Nate McLouth is a 20/20 candidate and a nice source of runs if he hits leadoff, which seems like a foregone conclusion. Martin Prado stole away the second base job last season but don’t expect too much considering his minor league stats. He is a nice utility/bench player who qualifies in many spots. Don’t look now, but the superstar they lack is on the horizon in Jason Heyward. The local prodigy has all the tools to be an all star.

Chipper Jones career is winding down. He is brittle and his bat is slow. If you do draft him make sure you have a backup who can play for more than a month at a time. Troy Glaus is too big of a risk for my blood. Maybe a last round pick if he has a decent spring. Matt Diaz and Melky Cabrera will be in some form of a rotation until Heyward is ready. Both are decent backups but nothing to get excited over.

ROTATION GRADE: A-

Derek Lowe will be the number one most likely, but his ’09 showing left a lot to be desired. He should bounce back in year two and still brings great durability. Jair Jurrjens had the worst luck of any pitcher posting a 2.60 ERA with a 14-10 record. The Braves scored less runs for him than any other starter and he could have easily been 18-6. Tommy Hanson is the best arm on the staff right now, but I am sure Bobby Cox will not overexpose the young kid. He is lights out and one of the brightest keepers on the market. Tim Hudson had a decent showing at the end of the year and is a nice late round flyer for rotation depth. Kenshin Kawakami will likely claim the fifth spot, but the jury is still out on him.

BULLPEN GRADE: B+

The age of closer Billy Wagner and setup man Takashi Saito keeps the bullpen grade from being an A, but if they stay healthy they are a very good 1-2 combo. You might want to own both for insurance purposes as if you were handcuffing running backs in a football draft.

CONCLUSION:

This is the last hurrah for Bobby Cox and the Braves will pull out all of the stops to send him out a winner. This team is deep and will make a serious run at a playoff spot and play meaningful games in September.

Adrian Gonzalez is the Padres’ franchise at this time. He is a 40/100 monster in a cavernous park who plays great defense, but his lack of supporting cast brings his overall value down a bit and keeps him from being a first round selection. Unfortunately, the Pads did nothing to help build around him for 2010. Kyle Blanks could finally provide some protection for Adrian, but he is still a young player adjusting to playing the outfield. Everth Cabrera has blazing speed, now he just has to learn to make a bit more contact. If he does, you could have a nice stolen base threat in roto formats.

Chase Headley has been oversold and although he had an improved second half in which he hit .293 with an OBP of .377, he is not the impact player San Diego thought he would be. Will Venable and Tony Gwynn Jr. are waiver wire outfielders at best who could fill in if you have injuries, but not much else. David Eckstein played well at times in San Diego, but if you find yourself starting him then something has gone terribly wrong for you. Nick Hundley…next!

ROTATION GRADE: D+

There is a black cloud hanging over Chris Young. He is either on the DL with a freak injury or missing time with shoulder issues. He has talent, but at this stage he is a waiver wire flyer. Jon Garland will eat innings and support this young staff as they mature, but don’t expect him to be a useful fantasy pitcher. Kevin Correia was the brightest star in the San Diego rotation in 2009 going 6-4 with a 3.26 ERA after the break. Don’t overvalue him, he still has a lot to prove, but worth a late round look. Mat Latos was lights out in the minors last year (combined 8-1 1.37 ERA 73K/12BB in 72IP) and held his own after his promotion. Expect big things soon. Clayton Richard, Aaron Poreda and Wade LeBlanc will battle for the fifth spot, my money is on Richard.

BULLPEN GRADE: A

Heath Bell saved 42 games with a great ERA of 2.71 and Nate Gregerson was filthy striking out 93 in 75 IP. He will take over if Bell gets dealt at the deadline which is a strong possibility.

CONCLUSION:

Adrian Gonzalez is a great player who is undervalued playing in a small market on a poor team. A few bright young spots and a nice bullpen, but too many questions and not enough answers in San Diego.

Pittsburgh finally got its superstar in the form of Andrew McCutchen whose combination of speed, power and baseball sense makes him one of the most exciting young players in the game. In 2010, it would not be shocking to see him hit 15 homers, steal 30 bases and score 90 runs. He is the real deal. Ryan Doumit had a tough season and should be a nice bounce back candidate especially considering how weak the catcher position this year. Jeff Clement is 26 and will most likely be the starting first basemen for the Prates this season. If he qualifies at catcher in your league he is a nice sleeper pick. The kid can hit, he just needs an opportunity. Pedro Alvarez should knock Andy LaRoche off the hot corner very soon, perhaps even by opening day. At 22, Alvarez could be the savior for the Pirates organization.

Garrett Jones slugged his way into the Bucs lineup in ’09, but I would expect Cinderella to lose her slipper on the way to the team bus this season. Akinori Iwamura is decent addition and might be a good $1 pick for middle infield. Lastings Milledge is a mediocre outfielder at best who could end up in a platoon with Ryan Church. Bobby Crosby should be out of the league by now, but somehow he is getting another shot…mind blowing.

ROTATION GRADE: F

The Pirate Staff seems as though they took one pitcher with a 4.00 ERA, no strikeout ability and a .500 record and cloned him four times. Zach Duke, Paul Maholm, Ross Olendorf, Daniel McCutchen and Charlie Morton, or as I prefer to call them by their celebrity name Zacpauloss McMortondorf, should be avoided like the plague. Although I hear that phrase will soon be changed avoid INSERT HERE like you would a Pirates starter.

BULLPEN GRADE: F

Joel Hanrahan and Octavio Dotel in the same pen!? What is the over under on saves? 4?

CONCLUSION:

Offensively they have some guys that can impact your team positively. Pitchers on the other hand… Zacpauloss McMortondorf strikes fear in hearts of all mankind.
