The Disappointments, Part I (Uno)
  • By Jack London
  • September 28th, 2009

The first article for a writer should leave a good impression. Leave that good feeling in your mouth.

Well guess what?

I’m not most writers.

You can forget that touchy feely good stuff in this first article anyway. I am going to be talking about the most overrated players in all of fantasy baseball this year. That’s right, those guys that are still on your roster but you know shouldn’t be. The guys who you expected so much from, yet just didn’t get it done. Let’s go position by position for the batters. Part II (Or Duex as I like to call it) you can read now…but read this first. Please.

Catcher: Matt Wieters, BAL

Okay a little sympathy here for the rookie. He’s not done badly. But for those of you who expected a savior when he finally got called up just got an OK catcher, if even that. He is behind the immaculate Dioneer Navarro on the ESPN player rater.

Dishonorable Mention: Geovany Soto, CHC

1st Baseman: Aubrey Huff, DET

That’s right. You heard me. He’s overrated this year. You just got the feeling he was ranked too high to start the season. And when you’re ranked behind Martin Prado…do I need to go on? Really?

Dishonorable Mention: Chris Davis, TEX

2nd Baseman: Kelly Johnson, ATL

It’s just bad karma. I mean, his name is Kelly. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, why on earth did you name your baby boy Kelly? Poor kid. And plus he got replaced by Martin Prado (notice a trend here?)

Dishonorable Mention: Mike Fontenot, CHI

Shortstop: Stephen Drew, ARI

Just not a good year for the Dbacks, Drew included. Drew, who was supposed to finally break out this year, well…hasn’t. He was supposed to be a top 10 SS, and now he’s barely a top 20. And only 11 HR for him all year at the time of this writing. Didn’t he have that many at the all star break last year?

Dishonable Mention: JJ Hardy, MIL

3rd Baseman: Aubrey Huff Adrian Beltre, SEA
It’s not entirely his fault. He only injured himself 6…no wait, make that 7 times throughout the season. Hang on everyone! Urgent news cast! Beltre and Kerry Wood threw a party and Beltre just choked on his cocktail! Oh!!!

Dishonorable Mention: Melvin Mora, BAL

Outfield #1: Ryan Ludwick, St.L

When you’re behind Franklin Gutierrez in any player rater, you, well…are overrated. It’s okay Ludwick, you and the other 7 outfielders for St. Louis will have another chance come the postseason.

Outfield #2: Manny Ramirez, LAD

Manny being Manny got him suspended 50 games. If we’d only known that coming into the season, we wouldn’t have drafted him in the 2nd or 3rd round (or even the first in some leagues). It’s ok- we know Manny’s not pregnant.

Dishonorable Mentions: Alfonso Soriano, CHC; Vladamir Guerrero, LAA

I guess Hamilton’s HUGE year wasn’t good enough to mention…..

Haha…well to be honest though, I think some guys, including myself, expected a little bit of a drop off. But point taken here! Josh escapes this time!!!

  3. Joe Pisapia says:

Nice post man!…I think Wieters having to adjust to working with the pitching staff took away from his offense. He will be grossly underrated in 2010. What a difference a year makes.
