DRAFT PREP: Outside the Box Sleepers

Let’s face it: pick your favorite fantasy source for information and you’ll likely find a sleeper list somewhere. But if you play in a bigger league, guys like Brett Anderson, Ricky Nolasco, Andrew McCutchen and Ian Stewart aren’t sleepers, they’re starters. So this list is going to focus on guys outside of the top 15 at each position, those players that may not be drafted as starters in 12-team leagues but could produce starter-quality numbers... So this list is going to focus on guys outside of the top 15 at each position, those players that may not be drafted as starters in 12-team leagues but could produce starter-quality numbers at their positions. For those that favor the more ‘traditional’ sleepers, I’ve included a list of names “You should know.” These are guys that will likely be among the top players drafted at their positions but aren’t yet household names. If you tuned out early last year or need a refresher course, make sure you’re...
Trading Deadline Changes Many Fantasy Values
- By Craig Rondinone

The NHL trading deadline has come and gone.
Now it is time to see if the fantasy values for the players traded will go up or down.
So what are the fantasy futures for the biggest names traded at the deadline? After rubbing my crystal ball/ Nicklas Lidstrom bobblehead doll, here is what I see...
Lubomir Visnovsky, Anaheim Ducks – The slick, puck-moving defenseman can quarterback any power play, and going from Edmonton’s sorry group of underachieving youngsters to Anaheim’s All-Star plethora of skilled veterans immediately boosts his fantasy value.
Look for the V-Man’s power-play goal and assist totals to be among the best for defensemen in the NHL over the final five weeks.
Ryan Whitney, Edmonton Oilers – Seems like Whitney...
Deadline Deals Create Attractive Options
- By Craig Rondinone

The NHL trading deadline was not highlighted by a bevy of blockbusters, but many minor swaps have opened doors for some secondary players to possibly become fantasy sleepers down the stretch.
If I have said it once I have said it a thousand times in these columns – keep Vesa Toskala off your fantasy roster.
Something else I have often said is that a player’s fantasy value usually goes up when he switches NHL teams.
That could very well be the case with some of the lesser names traded this past week.
Here are three players getting picked up on fantasy waiver wires this week:
Scott Walker, Washington Capitals
Fantasy owners have not heard much from Walker over the past couple seasons.
15 years...
Wagner Returns to Closer Role
- By Joe Pisapia

Hill”Billy” Wagner ended up down south where I predicted, as a closer for a team looking to save money.
I said it would be the Astros, but the Braves beat them to the punch.
Atlanta takes on Wagner on a year $7 million deal with a vesting option, a surprisingly high number considering his recent injury history and penchant for blowing up in big spots.
You would think that the Braves could have retained Rafael Soriano for much less than that, but as always their cagy management probably sees him as an even bigger injury risk.
You can bet that this being Bobby Cox’s swan song they will give the old skip his last chance at a winner and Wagner will provide stability to Atlanta’s 9th inning.
In Cox’s prolific...
Minnesota Wild Equipment Fire Could Haunt Fantasy Owners
- By Craig Rondinone
- December 21, 2009 02:19:46 PM
Did you hear the joke about the Minnesota Wild equipment van catching on fire and more than half of the team losing most if not all of their gloves, sticks and pads?
What, that was no joke?
Unfortunately, in a strange set of events, this story is true.
A fire destroyed much of Minnesota’s equipment, and now the team is scrambling around to have enough stuff to play games this next couple weeks.
Buy stock in Sports Authority.
So how does this affect fantasy hockey owners? Probably more than you think.
A hockey player’s equipment is usually broken in and comfortable.
That won’t be the case for many of the Wild players over the holidays and likely up until the New Year, so that could lead to some short-term fantasy struggles for the...
Ottawa-Carolina Trade Sparks Waiver Wire
- By Craig Rondinone

You have plenty of time to make waiver wire decisions in your fantasy hockey league now that the NHL is on a two-week-plus hiatus thanks to the Olympics.
Right before the roster freeze, the Ottawa Senators and Carolina Hurricanes made a trade that was somewhat lost in the transaction shuffle because of other blockbusters that dominated the headlines.
But the two main names involved in the deal might see their fantasy values increase due to switching teams.
Here are the two primary players from the Ottawa-Carolina swap, along with the 1,000th Colorado forward to make my waiver wire column this season:
Matt Cullen, Ottawa Senators
The veteran centerman has had a decent but unspectacular NHL career.
While a solid two-way player, Cullen has never been a fantasy stalwart.
He has seven 40-point campaigns to...
