Two Tigers Named to MLB.com’s Top 50 Prospect List
  • By Austin Drake
  • January 28th, 2010

It's a list released every year by Major League Baseball and is almost nearly as respected as the Baseball America rankings.

The 2010 MLB.com Top 50 Propsect list was recently unvieled to the fans. For the Detroit Tigers, names that have passed through that list in the past years would be those of Justin Verlander, Cameron Maybin, Rick Porcello and others.

This year the list is a domain of two newcomers to the Tigers organization, with #38 being Austin Jackson and #42, Jacob Turner. Just out of the top 50, Casey Crosby was ranked #54. Austin Jackson was ranked #27 in the 2009 MLB.com prospect list, but fell with his lack of Major League playing time with the New York Yankees.

With the offseason deal that sent him to Detroit, that will not...

TigerFest in Review: What Was Seen and Heard
  • By Austin Drake
  • January 24th, 2010

As many of us Detroit Tigers fans know, the yearly TigerFest took place yesterday afternoon.

Thousands of fans packed Comerica Park to get the rare signature of their favorite player, catch an interview with the team or just take in the ballpark atmosphere in the snow. It wasn't strange to hear the occasional; "Who is signing up there?", with the many new faces from New York, Arizona or just the Tigers own minor league affiliates.

Fans anxiously waited to snag an autograph from Miguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander or Magglio Ordonez, but most of the time ended up with players like Bobby Seay, Casey Fien, Zach Miner or Alex Avila. It was a long, chaotic day of Tigers baseball.

This is what was seen and heard around TigerFest 2010. Mario Impemba believes Magglio Ordonez...

Cabrera Turning the Page

The Tigers winter press caravan is well underway and by now you've probably read that Miguel Cabrera is a changed man.

Since his disastrous weekend on the season's final homestand, Cabrera has been sober.

Moreover, he has been working with a doctor to keep his drinking problem out of his life.

It's certainly a welcome change for all fans of Cabrera's.

And it appears to be a welcome change for Cabrera himself. Micheal Rosenberg of the Free Press penned a wonderful article on the subject and Eye of the Tigers' J.

Ellet Lambie offered his thoughts as well. Rosenberg noted that this new Cabrera smiled and laughed, that he appeared comfortable even when surrounded by reporters.

Even as he knew there would be tough questions, he was open and honest about his experiences.

2010 Pitching Rotation Outlook
  • By John Parent
  • January 22nd, 2010

It seems the Detroit Tigers starting pitching and their pitching rotation have always been a question of concern over the past decade or so. Last season, with the combination of lights out performances from Justin Verlander, Edwin Jackson and Rick Porcello, the Tigers had struck out their opponents and their non-believers in their strength of pitching. With 2010 fast approaching and Edwin Jackson now with Arizona in the desert to pitch after a deal that brought in younh arms Max Scherzer and Daniel Schlereth, the Tigers look to regain the starting pitching they got from the top three in the rotation once again. For Sure 2010 Rotation Members Justin Verlander After bouncing back from a dismal 11-17 2008, Verlander was neck and neck with Felix Hernandez and eventual Cy Young, Zack Grienke all season. Verlander dominated...

Trammell Waits for Hall Call
  • By John Parent
  • January 22nd, 2010

Alan Trammell hasn't played a game since 1996.  Today, Trammell awaits a phone call from the Baseball Hall of Fame.  It's a call that has not come in the eight previous years.  It will not come today either, it likely will never come. For 20 seasons, Trammell patrolled the shortstop position for the Detroit Tigers.  19 of those he played along side another Hall snub; Lou Whitaker.  Whitaker fell off the ballot in his first year of eligibility.  Trammell has been waiting for now nine years.  He will wait some more. This year, there is another shortstop on the ballot: Barry Larkin.  Larkin is in many ways the NL version of Trammell.  Both played stellar defense throughout their careers, but neither was recognized as the best glove man, thanks to careers that coincided with...

The Closer Situation for the Tigers in 2010
  • By John Parent
  • January 22nd, 2010

A year after the retirement of Todd Jones, the closer job was up for grabs when 2009's spring training rolled around. Jim Leyland had a choice of Fernando Rodney, newcomer Brandon Lyon, flamethrower Joel Zumaya and rookie Ryan Perry. Fernando Rodney was eventually Leyland's choice, and Rodney didn't make him look stupid as he posted 37 saves, while just blowing one. The Tigers season is now over and the question comes up, who will be the closer in 2010? Since Rodney never breezed through the ninth inning. Option One: Fernando Rodney Sure, Fernando Rodney was lights out when it came to save situations in 2009. He may not have dominated hitters like the stereotypical closer does, but he got the job done, heart attack aside. Rodney was 2-5 with a 4.40 ERA with 37 saves last...
