From Colorado to Japan- Matt Murton
- By Evan Bittner
- December 7th, 2009
As they winter meetings kicked off today the Rockies have made a move, but in all likelihood one you would not predict.
Murton is moving from the Rockies to the Hanshin Tigers in the Japanese league.
It is believed that Murton was released although there are some reports that claim he was sold.
The Rockies already had a crowded outfield so the move makes some sense especially after the Rockies stated that they w0uld be bringing back Ryan Spilborghs.
So in the end it is not much of a loss for the Rockies, and Murton gets a chance to make some better money and get a chance to play on a more regular basis.

Winter Meetings to Begin Monday
- By Evan Bittner
- December 4th, 2009
Yes, it's that time of the offseason again, the Winter Meetings.
The Winter Meetings are often the the peak of interest in Major League Baseball's offseason as it is when free agent interest increases and trade talks heat up.
As we enter the 2009 Winter Meetings the Rockies and General Manager Dan O'Dowd have a few things to address.
They are looking for a backup corner infielder possibly Bobby Crosby or Jamey Carroll.
The Rockies also are need of a catcher and will try to retain Yorvit Torrealba.
The Rockies will also considering adding a cheap starter, possibly Noah Lowry.
Rafael Betancourt will be attempted to retain as well.
What moves will the Rockies make, and could there be something bigger on the horizon.
Should be an interesting 4 days....
No Rift Between Rockies & Marquis
- By Evan Bittner
- December 3rd, 2009
There was a rumor started by SI's Jon Heyman a couple of days ago that if Jason Marquis declines the Rockies arbitration that it is because he is mad at the Rockies for not giving him a chance to start a game in the playoffs.
Now it is being reported that the rumor is false.
Both Marquis and General Manager Dan O'Dowd strongly deny the report.
If Marquis does indeed end up declining the arbitration offer, it is likely because he is seeking a multi-year deal instead of the one year deal accepting the arbitration offer would give him....
Rockies Hold Off Phillies To Tie Series
- By Evan Bittner
- December 3rd, 2009
It surely wasn't easy, but the Rockies fended off the Phillies today to bring the NLDS to a 1-1 with the Rockies 5-4 win over the Phillies this afternoon. Aaron Cook got the win, Cole Hamels the loss, and Huston Street recorded the save. The Rockies took an early lead an never relinquished it chasing Hamels from the game after scoring 4 runs in 5 innings. The Phillies quickly responded scoring 3 runs in the their half of the 5th inning but the bullpen was able to fight off a threatening Phillies lineup and preserve Cook's win. The Series is now tied 1-1, and will head over to Colorado for Game...
Rising Star: Centerfielder Dexter Fowler
- By Evan Bittner
- December 3rd, 2009
Going into 2009 Rockies’ top centerfield prospect Dexter Fowler was very highly touted, but nobody expected him to have quite the breakout season he did. Before 2009 Baseball America ranked Fowler 15th among MLB prospects and ESPN’s Keith Law rated him 30th. However, Fowler is no longer a prospect as he patrolled centerfield for the Rockies for most of the 2009 season. The Rockies organization didn’t feel the need for Fowler to get some seasoning at AAA as they promoted him to The Show straight from AA. Fowler’s .335 avg, 4.31 OBP, 49 extra-base hits, and 20 stolen bases were enough for Fowler to make the jump from AA to the majors, and he didn’t disappoint. Fowler hit a modest .266, but his on-base percentage was nearly 100 points higher...
Rockies' Dan O'Dowd Named Executive of the Year
- By Evan Bittner
- December 3rd, 2009
The strong organization of the Colorado Rockies is held together at the top by General Manager Dan O'Dowd. After 10 years on the job as the General Manager of the Colorado Rockies, O'Dowd has built up a formidable team. After a string of sub .500 seasons after his year on the job in 2000, the Rockies won 90 games and went to the World Series in 2007, and this year they went back to the playoffs again. O'Dowd is responsible for acquiring the solid young core of the team that should keep them very competitive in the NL West division for many years to come. Some of the stars O'Dowd was able to bring into the organization are Troy Tulowitzki and Matt Holliday, however the young core includes budding stars...
