Cavaliers Show Grit, Toughness Despite Injuries
- By Tim Bielik
- February 1st, 2010
First off, I sincerely apologize for the delay in posts. I went through wisdom teeth extraction and trying to start school on the right foot as it were. But while I was gone, it turns out the Cavaliers have played very well, landing their longest winning streak of the season, and they have done it without Mo Williams and Delonte West. The reason for the turnaround: Shaquille O'Neal has delivered with the added touches. The big man has accepted his spot as a role player all season long, which has been excellent when it comes to team chemistry. But now with the injuries taking hold, he has been phenomenal, averaging 18.4 ppg in the last five games. The replacement for both Mo and Delonte, Boobie Gibson, who has had trouble staying in the rotation...
Cavs’ Struggles Against Bad Teams Puzzling
- By Tim Bielik
- December 16th, 2009
Last season, the Cavaliers were beating the weak teams in the NBA handily time in and time out, while struggling with the top teams. This season, the script seems to be reversed, as they are struggling to beat weaker teams. Case in point the last week of the season, in which the Cavaliers lost to Memphis in overtime, and only beat the New Jersey Nets by10 Tuesday night in Cleveland. The Nets who have only won two games kept the game close despite the Cavaliers shooting 58% from the field in the game. Is this something Cavaliers fans should be concerned with? Possibly, although these are not teams Cleveland will be seeing in the playoffs. But it seems at times that the Cavs are sleepwalking on the court and not playing at their...
Cavaliers End a Strong November Back in First
- By Tim Bielik
- November 29th, 2009
Many people in Cleveland were concerned when the Cavs started the 2009 season 0-2 with losses at home against Boston and a stunner at Toronto. Quickly, those concerns have faded as Cleveland has picked up the pace, going 12-3 since the rough start to be within half a game of the Celtics for the 2nd spot out East. The Cavaliers have not been able to blow out teams like they did a year ago, and the defense isn't totally locked down as it was a year ago, but this team appears to be much more balanced than in years' past. The reason? Jamario Moon and Daniel Gibson have been huge off of the bench, combining to average under 13 points a game. With a team that last year had their bench depth...
Meet the New Guys-Leon Powe
- By Tim Bielik
- November 29th, 2009
With one championship ring already gleaming on his hand, Leon Powe no doubt comes to Cleveland looking to add one more by joining Lebron and Company. Along with that elusive championship ring, Powe brings a great presence down low, particularly on the offensive end of the court. After coming off the bench in the 2007-08 playoffs to score 11 points and grab 7 boards against the Cavaliers, Powe must have raised some eyebrows in Cleveland, prompting the signing in the off-season. While Powe’s career numbers aren’t exactly eye-popping at first, his per game statistics can be very misleading, given the little amount of playing time he put in. Over the past two seasons Powe’s per 40 minute statistics are absolutely surreal, given the lack of time...
Title or Bust? Is This Finally the Year for the Cavaliers? Why Not?
- By Tim Bielik
- November 29th, 2009
The mentality of the Cleveland Cavaliers could be best summarized in the words of the Big Shaqtus, "Win a ring for the King." But that begs the question: is this finally the year Cleveland ends the 46-year title drought? Does this team have enough depth and talent to compete with the best teams in the league in Boston, Orlando, San Antonio, and Los Angeles? Can this team get as many breaks as they did when they made the NBA Finals in 2007? In this instance, answering the latter in essence answers the former as well; in basketball, you have to make your own luck and luck comes from hard work, dedication, and talent. The Cavaliers have all of these things and plenty of young players looking to improve each and every year. Last...
Starting Slow: Cavaliers Trip Up in Opening Games, Missing West?
- By Tim Bielik
- November 29th, 2009
The season of great expectations has not gotten off to the great start that many had hoped for. The Cleveland Cavaliers dropped their first two games of 2009 to the powerhouse Boston Celtics and the surprising Toronto Raptors, and early questions are starting to surface. In the early games, one of the most noticeable trends are that the ball is just not going into the hoop. In the first two games, the team as a whole is shooting only 38% from the field, unacceptable for a team fighting for a championship. But an even more glaring problem is the lack of defense, giving up 98 ppg in the first two games. For a team whose mainstay and staple is stifing defense, this is a huge red flag and a major problem. But some...
