Mark Buehrle wins Gold Glove
  • By Vincent Kuo
  • November 16th, 2009

Add a Gold Glove to Mark Buehrle’s list of accomplishments. Before this award, he has a World Series ring, an All-Star game victory, a no-hitter, and a perfect game. Buehrle said that a Gold Glove would complete his career wish list. His wish came true when he got his first Gold Glove. Buehrle led AL pitchers with eight pickoffs, 55 total chances and 41 assists. He was tied for the league lead by assisting on five double plays. He would only commit one error during this season. Buehrle is the first Sox player to win a Gold Glove since third baseman Robin Ventura did it in 1998. Ventura was a 5-time Gold Glove winner. Buehrle learned he had won the award and immediately sent a text message to general manager Ken Williams. This is how Buerhle felt when he won the award. ”It’s weird to say, but it does rank just as high up as the perfect game, In this case, you are doing 95 percent of the work. During a perfect game, you are making the pitches, but you also have to depend on everyone making the plays behind you. I definitely take pride in fielding my position. I’ve always wanted to win a Gold Glove. It’s a great honor.” Other Gold Glove winners are Joe Mauer at catcher, Mark Teixeira at first base, Placido Polanco at second base, Evan Longoria at third baseball, Derek Jeter at shortstop and Adam Jones, Ichiro Suzuki and Torii Hunter at outfield.
