Cubs Lose, but Wells Stays Sharp
  • By Pat De Marco
  • March 9th, 2010

Despite falling to the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2 on Tuesday, Cubs right-hander Randy Wells continued to impress.  The 28-year old out of Belleville Illinois has threw three shutout inning extending his scoreless streak to five this spring.  Wells allowed just one hit over three innings while striking out two.   Things were not as good for Carlos Marmol, the Cubs closer gave up two runs in just one inning....

Disappointing Cubs Season Did Have a Few Good Moments
  • By Pat De Marco
  • March 5th, 2010

With just a few days left in the regular season, I thought this would be a good time look back at my top 10 moments of the Chicago Cubs 2009 season.  Let’s be honest, it was a very disappointing season.  That said, we’ll have plenty of time to dissect this season and look forward to the off season.  For now, let’s take a look at my top 10 Cubs moments of 2009.  10)  Opening Day:   Say what you want, but winning on opening day is always special. Alfonso Soriano hit the second pitch of the season out of the park and Carlos Zambrano cruised throwing 6 solid innings giving up just one run.  The Cubs defeated the Astros 4-2.  9) September 24, 2009:  If you’re not going to attend the party, you might as...

Cubs Say Goodbye to Three Veterans

The Chicago Cubs have decided not to offer arbitration to Rich Harden, Kevin Gregg, and Reed Johnson. Harden and Johnson were huge contributors to the Cubs 2008 divison title but both are injury proned and would have likely received  pay raises through arbitration.  Gregg  struggled in his only year with the Cubs going 5-6 with a 4.72 ERA and 23 Saves.    Known for keeping the ball in the park, Gregg gave up 13 homeruns in just 68 innings.  The Cubs will likely look to Jeff Samardzija to replace Harden in the rotation.  Despite battling through injuries harden has a 50-29 career record with a very impressive 3.39 ERA.  Chicago will open the season without two of last years starters.  Ted Lilly will likely start the season on the DL and Rich Harden will be pitching elsewhere...

Cubs Continue To Ignore Major Hole

One of the Chicago Cubs biggest weaknesses in 2009 was second base. Last year the Cubs second base position was fifth from the bottom in total OPS. How does a team address such a problem?  Well, the Cubs have chosen to do absolutely nothing to address the problem.  There were plenty of options for the Cubs this offseason.  One option would have been to sign Orlando Cabrera and move Theriot to second.  Another option would've been to sign Orlando Hudson to a one-year.  If those didn't work Felipe Lopez and Adam Kennedy were both significant upgrades.  Cubs general manager Jim Hendry felt that is was more important to fill his fourth outfield position.  He signed an everyday above average outfielder as his fourth outfielder.  Xavier Nady is a very good hitter, but the Cubs signed him to a one-year 3.4 million...
