Zurich, Switzerland – After battling with jet lag over the last two days the Chicago Blackhawks got to battle with a fellow hockey club, HC Davos of the Swiss Hockey League

Although the Blackhawks did not field their full NHL roster or their starting goal-tender, they were in control of the game from the drop of the puck not allowing Davos to ever be in the game.

The Blackhawks would strike nine minutes into the first period on a shorthanded goal by Troy Brouwer who was set up on a beautiful pass from captain Jonathan Toews but this was only the beginning as Brouwer’s goal would open the flood gates.

Patrick Kane and Brian Campbell would also add goals in the first period to make it 3-0 Blackhawks heading into the second period.

The second period was looking better for Davos as they were able to score a goal on the power play after a Patrick Sharp high stick but just  minute and a half later the Blackhawks would extend their lead back to three after a Evan Brophey tip in.

Patrick Sharp would add a pretty break away goal towards the end of the second period giving the Blackhawks a 5-1 lead after two.

The third period was more of the same for the Blackhawks who would tally four goals from Duncan Keith, Patrick Kane and two from newly acquired Radek Smolenak. Smolenak was claimed off of waivers from the Tampa Bay Lightning after learning that they would be without Adam Burish until March at the earliest.

Davos would add a goal in the final six minutes of the game to make the final score 9-2.

Although Davos is not the Detroit Red Wings it was good to see the Blackhawks offense finally clicking after a preseason which was rather lackluster on the offensive side.

Hopefully by getting the offense clicking towards the end of the preseason will translate into the start of the regular season against the Florida Panthers on October 2nd.

News and Notes

Tomorrow the Blackhawks will play Euro Champion Zurich Lions for the Victoria Cup. Once again the Blackhawks will probably only dress half of its starters and will continue to evaluate who will receive the final few spots on the roster.

One starter who will surely be starting is Cristobal Huet who will get his final work until the start of the regular season in Helsinki.

Radek Smolenak made a great first impression on Coach Joel Quenneville and could fit on the Blackhawks fourth line with the absence of Adam Burish.

Dave Bolland and Cam Barker both expect to be in the lineup against the Zurich Lions tomorrow.
