Bruins stay in eighth place in East with win over Hurricanes
- By Vincent Kuo
- March 17th, 2010
The Boston Bruins didn't care who got the credit, as long as they ended their seven-game road trip on a positive note.
Five players scored goals Tuesday for the Bruins, who got 30 saves from Tuukka Rask to hold on to eighth place in the Eastern Conference with a 5-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.
Boston was just 1-3-1 in its previous five games, losing its grip on a playoff spot.
The players got together before Tuesday's game and talked about how important it was to close out the road swing with a victory and to create momentum for the final stretch of the regular season.
"We needed a huge win tonight, I think we all knew that," said Mark Recchi, one of four Bruins players with a goal and...

The Carolina Hurricanes will welcome the Boston Bruins to RBC Center on Tuesday night.
The Carolina Hurricanes won't have the chance to end the Boston Bruins' season for the second straight spring, but that won't stop them from trying to put a major dent in Boston's playoff hopes.
The Bruins may need a win Tuesday at Carolina to remain in postseason position in the Eastern Conference, and they'll have to summon some energy as they close out a seven-game, 11-day road trip.
The Hurricanes eliminated Boston in overtime of Game 7 in the East semifinals last season, but it's possible neither club will even qualify for the 2010 playoffs.
Carolina's hopes are slim as the team is currently 14th in the conference, but the eighth-place Bruins are in the thick of a tight...
Coyotes’ Bryzgalov stops 29 shots to collect NHL-best eighth shutout

Ilya Bryzgalov and the Phoenix Coyotes are making themselves right at home on the road.
Bryzgalov made 29 saves for his NHL-leading eighth shutout, and Lee Stempniak and Martin Hanzel each scored twice to help the Coyotes -- who will play 10 of their final 14 games on the road -- beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-0 on Saturday.
"Just a solid road game," Phoenix coach Dave Tippett said.
" cleaned up the few chances that we gave up, but other than that we had a real good group effort."
Stempniak has four goals in his last two games and five since joining the Coyotes in a trade with Toronto.
Adrian Aucoin had two assists.
Phoenix won its fourth straight and snapped the Hurricanes' home winning streak at eight.
Justin Peters...

The Carolina Hurricanes will welcome the Florida Panthers to RBC Center on Tuesday night. The Hurricanes will try to win their fourth in a row at RBC Center on Tuesday night when they take on a Panthers club that's won only twice in Raleigh since January 2003. After losing the first two games, Carolina (21-30-7) earned a split of the four-game trip by defeating Buffalo and the New York Islanders over the weekend. Rookie Justin Peters turned away 34 shots in his NHL debut in Saturday's 3-1 victory over the Islanders - the Hurricanes' sixth win in eight games. "Justin's performance says that he deserves another shot, and we want to see him," Carolina coach Paul Maurice told the team's official Web site Monday. Peters, though, will not start until Thursday versus Buffalo...
Hurricanes-Panthers Preview

- March 14th, 2010
The Carolina Hurricanes will travel to the BankAtlantic Center to take on the Florida Panthers. These 2 teams will have a home-and-home series with each other. The Panthers are suddenly gaining confidence since they have won 3 of their last 4 games and they’ll look to continue their strong play when they host the Hurricanes on Friday night. The last game the Panthers played, they beat the Atlanta Thrashers 4-3 at home. The Panthers led 3-0 during the game, but the Thrashers scored 3 straight goals to tie the game. Michael Frolik would score the game winner late in the 3rd period. The Hurricanes are coming off of a win themselves, beating the Dallas Stars 5-3 at the RBC Center. Tuomo Ruutu would score his first career hat trick in...
Can the Canes make the playoffs this season?
- By Vincent Kuo
- March 14th, 2010
The question is that can the Carolina Hurricanes make the playoffs this year. I would say the Hurricanes will miss out on the playoffs this year. For the Canes to make the playoffs this year they’re going to have to win at least 33 more games this season and other teams would have to lose. They are currently last in the Eastern Conference with 24 points and they’re last in the league with 89 goals. They are also tied with the Columbus Blue Jackets on giving up the most goals in the league with 131. For starters, the Canes should start winning on the road and also be a good home team also. The Hurricanes had injury problems this season since their 3 star players in Eric Staal, Cam Ward...
