The Celtics shooting woes can be directly attributed to the fact that Ray Allen isn’t getting the open threes that he is accustomed to. Opposing defenses have extended to force him to drive and the wrong player is attempting them i.e. Rasheed Wallace. The Boston media and other fan sites are opining his lack of production. They should be concerned to some extent, because this is Ray-Ray’s third year on Causeway street. He has yet to find his stroke, but is still the preferred choice for a last second shot.
People forget that Ray Allen has always had a tremendous in-between game; he can take his defender of the dribble, pop a ‘Jay’ on a dime and on occasion a dunk. This is the aspect of his game that he is trying to revitalize. Kobe Bryant has begun to include a post up game to his repertoire. The key here is that all great players look to take advantage of their changing skill sets; Ray Allen is no different.
Allen is known as an NBA sniper, that one player with the ability to drill jumpers with impunity. His shots are a thing of beauty; he will take and make them from impossible angles. Fans should enjoy Ray’s forays to the hoops; after all there is nothing wrong with getting three the old fashion way, from the free throw line.
Doc Rivers knows Ray Allen doesn’t need specific plays ran for him, his basketball intellect is such that he can find the open spot on the floor.
The team overall is just plain struggling on the offensive end. The question is why? They have the same starting five and the only changes are to the bench. The answer can be found in some of Doc River’s earlier comments. He stated in one of his interviews, that he had not put in any offensive plays for the team. If that is the case then their offensive woes can be directly attributed to them learning on the fly.
How many NBA teams can do that in the midst of the regular season? The Celtics have to find ways to challenge themselves throughout the regular season, maybe this is Doc’s way of keeping their minds fresh. What else can explain the offensive ennui that they have shown so far?
