The Celtics struck just the right chord in a 105-86 shellacking of the Utah Jazz, all five starters scored in double figures. They outscored the Jazz 30-18 in the third quarter and Deron Williams had a pedestrian game.
Boston continues to use the regular season like its own proving ground, when they have their legs the ball movement would make Red proud. Each starter had double figures, the highest had 18 points and the bench was steady as usual.
The matchup between Rajon Rondo and Williams did not live up to its billing. Williams was suffering from a back ailment and his movement was somewhat stunted. He still finished the game with 7 rebounds 4 of them on the offensive boards.
As the game progressed it was plain to see that Rondo could have revved it up several notches if he had too. He had 14 points and 11 assists and controlled the game on both ends of the court.
Carlos Boozer has a body that is built for the inside game; he and Kevin Garnett both possess a decent jumper which opens up the lane for the occasional drive to the hoop. Boozer was virtually invisible in this game and seemed interested in getting his own shot off. Garnett on the other hand, moved the ball, got into the passing lane and was a catalyst for the fast break.
Ray Allen rediscovered his shooting touch and seemed to have gotten rid of that annoying habit of passing the ball while in the air.
Paul Pierce mixed his game up a little, he still took too many three pointers but at least he took it to the rim.
Kendrick Perkins “the beast”, has made himself into a viable offensive weapon in the low post, the Jazz showed him the ultimate sign of respect and occasionally double teamed him in the post. This subtle improvement in Perks game has increased his value to the team; he still has to work on his free throws.
Marquis Daniels returned from his one game excused absence and righted the second unit; without him the spacing is off and they struggle. Sheldon Williams continues to show that he belongs in the second unit rotation. He still needs to gain strength as he can be easily rooted out of his position.
Doc Rivers has very little to complain about, however he should be troubled by the fact that Boston was out hustled on their own defensive glass. The Jazz swarmed the offensive glass getting three often four shot attempts. This can come back to haunt them in the long run.
There is no doubt that the Boston Celtics will address this issue as well as whatever areas they need too. After all they have miles to go before they reach, miles to go before they reach the NBA’s highest peak.
