2010 Orioles’ promotional schedule
- By Domenic Vadala

So now that the glitter of Super Bowl 44 has cleared and everyone's dug out from the "snowpacolypse," baseball's still on it's way! I've always thought that baseball did the best job of all the sports in offering promotions to draw people to the games. Other sports used to do similar stunts, but a lot of that has ceased. I remember a preseason game in the early 1990's when the Washington Redskins gave away a free duffel bag and ball cap to all fans in attendance. Unfortunately you'd never see an NFL franchise doing something like that nowadays. That said, there are some promotions that are obviously designed as "gestures of goodwill." This would be any giveaway that occurs on a day when one could assume a good draw at the...
When you wish upon a star

Geeze there's a lot going on today! First and foremost, it's Super Sunday...Colts vs Saints. This could potentially be one of the highest scoring Super Bowls ever. Having said that, my beloved Maryland Terrapins also take on the hated UNC Tar Heels this afternoon at 2 PM, in what should be a decent "appetizer" for this evening's Super Bowl. With regard to the big game, I've always loved how the MVP gets to shout "we're going to Disney World" at the conclusion of the game. Then for the next week or so we get the TV commercials where they show highlights of the MVP playing in the game, while playing When you wish upon a star from Disney's Pinocchio. To this day, that's still my all-time favorite Disney movie, and Jiminy...
Brian Matusz rated #5 on Top 50 prospect list
- By Domenic Vadala

Last week mlb.com released it's top 50 prospects in the game today, and the Orioles' Brian Matusz was ranked fifth. Hold on...did I say fifth?! That's right, out of the top 50 prospects in the game today, the Orioles have the fifth best! This is big folks. In case some of you haven't noticed, I'm pretty complimentary of the job that Andy MacPhail's doing. I've met the man once in my life, and I'm certainly not on his payroll, so that basically means I'm saying these things because I truly believe them. My point is that this is just another peg upon which MacPhail can hang his hat. As I've said in the past, when MacPhail took over his current job, the Orioles' farm system was ranked 29th in the...
The O's are in need of an 11th hour win

As I’m writing, I’m sitting down to watch this evening’s O’s vs. Tampa Rays game. Tonight’s match-up will be the first of several “lasts” for the O’s this weekend and this season. This is the last game of the last road series of the year for the Orioles, and thus the last time we’ll see those new away jerseys with BALTIMORE written across the front. (And incidentally the new road uniforms were a change that I was thrilled to see the Orioles make starting this year.) At the conclusion of the game, the team will head back to the airport, and board their team charter for the last time this season, bound once more for our beloved Old Line State. Unfortunately for the O’s, they’re a “perfect” 13 losses out of...
Baseball's Charm City Cathedral

I go to a lot of sporting events throughout the course of the year. Most recently, I attended my twentieth Oriole game this season on September 6, 2009. The majority of those games were at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, although I did see the O’s three times in DC at Nationals Park, and once up in Boston at Fenway. Nevertheless, I feel that I’m somewhat of an authority on the topic of ballparks and stadiums, seeing that I go to so many each year. Just to name a few, I’ve been to Oriole Park at Camden Yards, FedEx Field, RFK Stadium, M & T Bank Stadium, Memorial Stadium, Cole Field House, Byrd Stadium, and Comcast Center among many others. In my opinion, Oriole Park at Camden Yards is the best...
Hecklers vs. Fans
- By Domenic Vadala

Different people have different names for them…some call them hecklers, some haters, and some antagonizes. But ultimately, we all know someone that falls into this category. When you’re a person such as myself that wears his sports loyalties on his sleeve, people sometimes latch onto that and tease you when things aren’t going so well for that particular team. To me, the worst ones are non-sports fans. (And while I’m on the topic, how is it possible that anyone couldn’t love sports?!) People that don’t like sports like to tease and taunt those that do to no end. Honestly, I think that non-sports fans were just born passionless. They see that us sports fans have that passion that they obviously lack, and that bothers them to no end. In truth, they’re...
