Did the Braves Take a Major Risk in Signing Tim Hudson? Why Sky Andrecheck is Dead Wrong.
- By Jim Cheney
- February 8th, 2010
Looking back on the Braves' 2009-2010 offseason, it is obvious that the key date was November 12, 2009. On this date, Tim Hudson and the Braves agreed to a three year extension that would pay the hurler $9 million a year for the next three seasons. Hudson's signing set in motion the events that led to the trade Javier Vazquez and gave the Braves the financial flexibility to sign Billy Wagner, Troy Glaus, and others. While every signing and move is a risk, some analysts are starting to wonder whether signing Hudson to a three year extension was, in fact, a major risk. One of the more notable analysts suggesting such an idea is SI.com's Sky Andrecheck. In a recent article that appeared as the main baseball story on the Sports Illustrated website,...
Fox Sports still playing up Damon to Tigers or Braves
- By John
- February 6th, 2010
Johnny Damon still hasn't signed and despite any real reason to believe the Braves have had any contact with agent Scott Boras they are still being linked to the outfielder. Fox Sports again reported late last night that the Braves, along with the Tigers, are the top two teams seeking Damon's services. They also went ahead and contradicted themselves later in the article by saying the Braves have been passive on the approach and would only sign Damon if he "fell into their lap". I guess this story just won't go away yet. PicApp Image. Will Detroit just sign him already so we don't have to see it...
Recapping Atlanta’s Winter League Successes and One Failure
- By Jim Cheney
- February 4th, 2010
Did you think that the baseball season ended in October and doesn't start up again until later this month? Well, if so, you are only half right. During the Winter months 30 different players from the Atlanta system have been playing Winter Ball in five different leagues. Winter baseball gives a chance for prospects to hone their skills and for more established, Latin American players, to be able to play in front of the home crowd. While most of the leagues don't feature top-level competition, the teams are permeated with Major League talent. The first league to start, and to finish, is the prospect showcase league, the Arizona Fall League. The Braves had seven of their top prospects playing in the league during the months of October and November. I did a full recap of...
My 2010 BBA Hall of Fame Ballot: The Five Who Made the Cut
- By Jim Cheney
- February 4th, 2010
So, here we are. After two articles that ended up being much longer than I anticipated we are finally at the end. It's time to me to defend my choices and explain why I voted for the five candidates that I did for the Baseball Blogger's Alliance virtual Hall of Fame. In the first blog in this series, I talked about my voting criteria and the players who belonged in the "Hall of Pretty Good". In the second blog in the series, I talked about the players who just missed my cut and were in the "Hall of Maybe Next Year". Now, without further ado, I present to you my five vote getters for BBA Hall of Fame induction. Hall of Fame Dale Murphy - Lets get things started by talking about Murphy, one of...
A First Look at the Braves' 2010 Lineup
- By Jim Cheney
- February 4th, 2010
Coming into the 2009 offseason, Braves' fans were counting on the addition of a right-handed power bat to help the Braves reach the playoffs in 2010. Unfortunately though, it doesn't appear that Frank Wren will be able make a deal or signing which will satisfy this need in a manner that Braves' fans would have liked. So the question is, have the Braves actually improved their starting lineup over the starting linuep from the start of the 2009 season? Well, let's take a quick first look at my predicted lineup for Opening Day. Barring injury or another unexpected signing or trade, I see the 2010 opening day lineup looking like this... Nate McLouth Martin Prado Chipper Jones Troy Glaus Brian McCann Yunel Escobar Matt Diaz Melky Cabrera Overall, while it isn't the most impressing looking lineup imaginable and doesn't include a...
Six Questions the Braves Must Answer This Offseason, Part 1
- By Jim Cheney
- February 4th, 2010
The 2009 edition of the Atlanta Braves was infuriatingly close to be an excellent team. On the back of the best starting staff in baseball, the Braves offensive production went through ups and downs that resulted in the Braves missing the postseason for the fourth straight season. This offseason, Frank Wren has a great foundation from which to build a contender in 2010, but he does have six questions that he must answer before the new season starts. In today's addition we will discuss the first two questions for the Braves. Later in the week, we will discuss the other four questions and I will also purpose a series of trades that I believe can make the Braves contenders in 2010 and beyond. Question 1: Is Jason Heyward ready for the Majors or...
