Andrew Bailey Named AL Rookie of the Year
- By Colin Means
- November 16th, 2009
Oakland Athletics closer Andrew Bailey was named the American League Rookie of the Year on Monday.
He finished with 88 points on the voting ballot, while Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus came in second with 65 points.
Bailey was named an AL All-Star this season and finished with a 1.84 ERA, 26, saves, and 91 strikeouts as opposed to 24 walks.
Coming into the season the Athletics did not have a clear-cut closer. Bailey saw the opportunity and took advantage of it.
Besides Bailey, two other A's have won Rookie of the Year this decade, shortstop Bobby Crosby in 2004 and closer Huston Street in 2005.
In the past years the A's have played host to Rookie of the Year winners such as Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco.
Each of the winners the past three years,...

The Angels narrowly avoided elimination on Thursday night by defeating the Yankees 7-6 and sending the series back to New York.
The Yankees now hold a 3-2 series lead.
Things were looking good for the Angels early on after a four run first inning.
The Yankees would later cash in on a six run seventh and take a 6-4 lead, but the Angels responded with a three run inning in the bottom half of the seventh and retook the lead 7-6, which would be the final score.
An interesting note, Angels catcher Jeff Mathis became the first player ever to have six consecutive hits against the Yankees in the postseason.
Vladimir Guerrero, Torii Hunter, and Kendry Morales each had two hits and two RBI for the Angels.
Alex Rodriguez had one hit...

Sabathia pitched eight strong innings for the Yankees, and was too much to handle for the Angels.
He allowed four hits, a walk, and an earned run while striking out seven.
John Lackey struggled, going 5.2 innings and giving up nine hits and four runs, although two of the runs were unearned.
It was a frustrating night defensively for the Angels, who committed three errors.
One such error in the first inning had Lackey on his knees verbally expressing his disgust.
Neither shortstop Erick Aybar and third baseman Chone Figgins called for a routine infield pop up, and the ball landed in between them on the basepath.
Said manager Mike Scioscia, "These guys are not going to be robots out there.
It's a mistake.
It was ugly.
But it happens."
Kendry Morales had...

Angels Host Red Sox in Game One of the ALDS

- October 17th, 2009
The MLB playoffs continue today with the Angels, the AL West representatives, and the Red Sox, who earned the American League wild card spot. Taking the mound for the Angels will be John Lackey (11-8), with Jon Lester (15-8) starting for the Red Sox. In the last 13 postseason meetings between these two teams, the Red Sox have won 12. The Angels have also lost six consecutive postseason home games, a streak that will have to end in order for them to continue their season. The Angels are looking to make a case against their so-called "curse" in this series, and they couldn't ask for a better lineup to do it with. They have an astounding number of nine batters hitting at least .290, and also cracked franchise records for hits, RBIs, and runs this season. Slugger...
Angels Headed to the Playoffs

- October 17th, 2009
The Rangers have been on the heels of the Angels all season long, but the division race is over. The Angels have clinched the AL West and will face the Red Sox in the first round of the American League playoffs. There have been nine meetings between the Angels and Red Sox this season, with the Angels owning the series lead with a 5-4 edge. It hasn't been an easy path for the Angels this season, from the tragedy of losing pitcher Nick Adenhart in an auto accident to extensive injuries to key players such as Torii Hunter and Vladimir Guerrero. The Angels will have home-field advantage in the series and the healthier squad, both of which will be key aspects in contributing to the outcome of the series. We should expect to see a lot of...
