Report: Blue Jays to Enter Chapman Bidding
- By E.A.
- January 1st, 2010
With John Lackey and Jason Bay off the free agent market, and with the Cardinals practically bidding against themselves for the services of superstar left fielder Matt Holliday, Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman is probably the hottest commodity on the market right now.
Most people know the story of Chapman already.
Just 21 years old, the left-handed flamethrower defected from the Cuban national team this past summer while in the Netherlands for a tournament.
Chapman is six-foot-four, 180 pounds, and according to some, is one of the three best pitchers in the entire world not employed by Major League Baseball.
The other two are Japanese phenom Yu Darvish and Washington Nationals' superprospect (whose non-MLB status will probably disappear sometime during the 2010 season) Stephen Strasburg.
Chapman is best known for his electric fastball, which,...
Lowell Requires Surgery; Trade Nixed
- By E.A.
- December 20th, 2009
Following a visit with the Texas Rangers medical staff to examine Mike Lowell's injured right thumb on Saturday, the trade of Mike Lowell for Max Ramirez has been canceled.
The deal had been agreed upon nearly two weeks ago, however Lowell's ongoing health concerns ultimately put an end to the trade.
The recovery time for Lowell's thumb surgery is an estimated six to eight weeks, so the third baseman does expect to be ready for Spring Training....
Keeping Up With the Blue Jays
- By E.A.
- December 15th, 2009
It's been one day, but they've done a lot since the Roy Halladay news came out of nowhere.
A three team deal has been announced sending two high profile aces on the move, a couple of big name prospects have been swapped, and the AL East got some very good news.
Toronto agreed to trade Roy Halladay to the Philadelphia Phillies.
Phillies prospects Michael Taylor, Kyle Drabek, and Travis D'Arnaud will go to Toronto.
To clear away money to make this deal work, Philadelphia will send Cliff Lee to Seattle, and Seattle will give the Phillies Phillippe Aumont, Tyson Gillies, and Juan Ramirez.
Right after acquiring Halladay, the Phillies announced a three year contract extension worth about $60 million.
It doesn't seem like a three-way deal so much as it seems like two...
2009 Reg. Season Review: Baltimore Orioles
- By E.A.
- December 15th, 2009
We are now in the final month of baseball for all but eight lucky MLB franchises, and for three teams in the American League East, another brutal season is winding down while once again the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are trotting onward towards the playoffs. For those three teams who find themselves out of the playoff race (although one could argue that for one team that race never began), it is about the appropriate time to start reflecting upon the 2009 season. Moving from the bottom of the cellar up, the Baltimore Orioles find themselves first to be crossed off the to-do list in my 2009 AL East review. Regular Season Grade: C- Obviously, this Orioles squad was bad, currently in dead last among the East while having one...
Orioles Reach Agreement For Kevin Millwood
- By E.A.
- December 15th, 2009
Earlier this afternoon, the Baltimore Sun's Jeff Zrebiec and FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported that the Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles have agreed to swap pitchers Kevin Millwood and Chris Ray. According to reports, the deal will be official pending physicals, and the Rangers are prepared to pay $3 million of Millwood's $12 million salary. Ray, who burst onto the scene in 2005 for the Orioles and became their closer in 2006, looked like a promising reliever before blowing out his arm and having some issues on the mound since. Millwood is coming off his best season since 2005, after going 13-10 with a 3.67 ERA despite career worst HR/9 (1.2) and K/9 (5.6) rates. Millwood figures to anchor Baltimore's weak rotation, while Texas is reportedly getting ready to spend that $9 million...
NY Yankees: Johnny Damon or Hideki Matsui?
- By E.A.
- December 15th, 2009
With Hideki Matsui's contract coming to a close, the Yankees have a big decision to make this winter regarding the contract of Johnny Damon. While Matsui, who has been hampered by knee injuries in previous years, has not played an inning in the field in the 2009 season, Damon remains a serviceable left fielder and a consistently good hitter. With that being said--who should stay and who should go? Matsui may not be able to play the field anymore, but he still had a fine season, finishing with a .274/.367/.509 slash line, an .876 OPS, 28 homers, and 90 RBI. And as the Yankees continue to march towards their ultimate goal of a World Series, Matsui has been quite the contributor. In this World Series, Matsui is batting .500 with a pair of...
